I used Magento Connect and the text below appeared in the frame.

Once I hit the refresh button at the bottom of the frame, I got 500 Internal Server Error.  I can’t access the website anymore.

I have cleared the download and cache folders in downloader/pearlib/.  500 Error still remains.

Hi,
please check your .htaccess file, seems that problem is there.
Try replacing it with your old .htaccess file or reviewing and merging all the changes.

Thanks for the prompt response.

I am hosting with inmotion hosting.  My v 112 and v115 are working just fine.

The issue happened when I tried to upgrade 114 to 115.

As per your suggestion I have tried to use the sample htaccess, and htaccess file from other good installations of v 112 & v 115.

I am still getting the 500 error.

Error_log has the following, and it had the same error earlier too when the site was running ok with v1.14.

I believe the errors below are from right before I tried to upgrade.  In my htaccess

php_flag suhosin.session.cryptua off

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

I just checked my server log, and found.
==========
[Wed Sep 17 06:06:55 2008] [error] [client 24.167.221.191] SoftException in Application.cpp:260: File “/home/ra/public_html/index.php” is writeable by others
==============

I don’t know how the permissions on index.php became 666, I changed the permissions back to 644, and now the site is working fine.

I have received one more error below, even though the site is working ok:

==========
[Wed Sep 17 06:10:23 2008] [error] [client 24.167.221.191] SoftException in Application.cpp:260: File “/home/ra/public_html/js/index.php” is writeable by others, referer: http://rajacademy.net/
==========

So, I am going to change the permissions to 644 on the file in question.

I have checked a lot of the folders and the permissions are set to 666 on the files, which to me sounds like leaving room for hackers.

Any suggestion as to how I can change the permissions to desired setting in an easy way, rather than going a file at a time.

Ranjit

use

chmod -R MODE /path/to/your/folder
where MODE is 644 if you want to set it…

note: don’t forget about folders that should be writable by your web server (i.e. ‘media’, ‘var’ etc)

Thank you so much for helping promptly.

Should I be concerned regarding the permissions issue every time I upgrade??

yes, because downloader deletes all the files in upgrade mode and after that installs new files there

I am trying to figure out whether I should go through the hassle of changing permissions.

I’d appreciate you addressing this question:

Is it a security concern if I left the permissions at 666 for the files where permissions were 644 before upgrade via Magento Connect?

i recommend you to change these permissions to avoid problems in future…
i.e. if you use shared hosting without proper restrictions, somebody from this server can change your files without having any problems…

OK I had the same error messages as you.  I also found that my file was 666 not 644.  After changing a few of them it still has the issue....maybe I need to find more.
