Magento Connect error

This is a fresh install of Magento, everything is working ok, except for Connect.  As soon as I click it’s menu item I get:

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required ‘PEAR.php’ (include_path=’.:/usr/bin/pear:/var/www/vhosts/tftdesigns.co.uk/httpdocs/shop/lib:/var/www/vhosts/tftdesigns.co.uk/httpdocs/shop/app/code/core:/var/www/vhosts/tftdesigns.co.uk/httpdocs/shop/app/code/local:/var/www/vhosts/tftdesigns.co.uk/httpdocs/shop/app/code/community’) in /var/www/vhosts/tftdesigns.co.uk/httpdocs/shop/downloader/pearlib/php/PEAR/Registry.php on line 2229

When I run ‘which pear’ at the command line I get:
/usr/bin/pear

So I assume my include is pointing correctly?

I can run pear in SSH also, so its definately installed.

The permissions for the pear file that Magento supplies might not be set. Do this from the root directory where Magento is installed:

chmod o+x pear

...or this:

chmod 777 pear
