Can Magento deal with a large product range (approx 200,000)?

Are there any live sites with a large product range?

We’d like to set one up and would like to ‘pick the brains’ of someone who has done this already.

In particular, we’d like to know:

i) what’s the best way to load the products at a reasonable speed, say 1 hour

ii) what are the best performance tuning tips?

iii) what is the best server setup to support this?

Hi,

I have the same questions. My fathers company currently stocks around 320,000 products and I want to know if Magento can handle this number of products and still function effectively.

did you manage to find any useful information?

regards

chris

Hey Chris,

Just out of curiosity, what kind of business does your father run with 320,000 different products?

Skippy

sells spare machine parts and tools..so lots of products that are minutely different but just a hell of a lot of them. there probably isn’t that many parts in stock but that’s how many were spat out of the stock management system…

I think it cann’t.
1. nobody can say yes within one week including the Magento team
2. upload products is too slow. about 20 per min. It break down several times without tips for hundreds of products.

I sell parts too...I have about 10,000 right now and hope to add many more. I find myself having to work outside of the system, meaning direct database access for pricing and stock level updates and also creating custom php files for manually rebuilding the layered navigation indices. The initial upload would be very painful and slow; I would probably break them into chunks of 1,000 or 2,000 because it will bomb out. As far as speed goes once everything is in, it may be ok. It would be an interesting test.

Anybody can do a test report regarding the status when importing products from 5K, 20K, 50K, 100K, 200K, or more?

Some software would be takes over ten minute to open a new page (admin panel). So it is the maximum quantity.

Magento team, can you tell us the limit quanltiy?

Hi jeff, I read here http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/17189/ that you have php files for manually rebuilding the layered navigation indices, it would be nice if you can share this files with us. I’m figthing with our magento site and I have big problems with layered navigation. Wha’t version are you using? how do you update the stocks ? thank you in advance !

Magento cannot handle more products. when you hit 300+ products the layered navigation will disappear. i selected Magento because of it’s layered navigation capabilities. If you are serious in e commerce, either get their enterprise version, or look for another solution.
grin

you said layered navigation will not work for 300+ SKU
are you serious?

Are there any official statements from the core developers on how many products Magento can handle?

I’m evaluating Magento for a new project, and one requirement is that the store system has to be able to handle 5,000,000 different products.

If people doubt 200,000 products, then 5,000,000 will be just over the limit?

Thanks for any recommendation!

this kind of project will cost in upwards of $50,000

first ask yourself if you are prepared to spend that kind of money before asking if it is feasible.
