How about setting up a money pool for developer challenges? That way we could come very easily to sums that would really get developers fingers moving up and down like sewing machines. All the members really wanting the suggested module could contribute. If we have 33 000 members on the forum, if 10% of them would want something really bad that would, with everyone throwing in a dollar that would still make over three grand, or 1% throwing in a tenner, I’d like to see if this would work out!
I am using Miva on my main site. Miva barebone has very limit functions when I used the version 5, however you only need to spend a little bit on some modules, it can have most features you can imagine. Some powerful modules are very cheap, under $50.
I DO hope Magento can build a module community which have many programmers contributing to it. I don’t think any serious e-businessman would be reluctant to pay $50 for a useful modules.
I think the money pool idea is an excellent way to spur further development of magento and may bring a more technical savvy life to forums. Which is desperately needed to answer some of the current post. A simple Script lance type of script modified to allow contributions would do the trick, where developers and end user would have a safe place to post work on. Plus not to mention, it will generate much needed revenue for your company with commission % of a couple of points. Also, the google api is an excellent idea to import and export products, but I don’t know if any developers would bite on $300.00, where as if we did this money pool idea we could increase the bounty and thus increase the interest into developing this. Also, I would suggest that any development that was generated from this pool idea wouldn’t be released to the general public unless they contributed to the money pool in the amount of ($5-$10) to spur further development of magento.
What do you?
Actually your magento script would do the trick once all the features and been implemented
I was thinking this more for bits and pieces that people might need but that aren’t now on Varien’s mind at the moment, and when someone come up with something achieving the requirements the moeny would be transfered to that contributor.
I think a money pool is a great idea to make this community grow faster. It would definitely make my fingers sweep over the keyboard a bit faster anyways, hehe :D. Though the biggest reward for contributions to an open source community will of course always be the feeling of helping others ^^
I like this idea ... the only thing is I don’t need what is in the current challenge, so there is no point for me to pledge. If however the challenge is for something I need ... I’ll pledge.
That would require a full-on system and would be ideal. I don’t need it either but I (and everybody else) do need as many skilled Magento developers who know the code inside out. So I am happy to give a nominal fee to support a project I don’t directly need because I know it will a) help others - who then go on to drive further innovation down the line by asking for or contributing new stuff and b) help get developers drop their other projects and focus on Magento and c) help the profile of the Challenges so more people will have more interest in them and d) in the end of the day it will help me because the community is better off.
The more people interested in, innovating and progressing Magento the more I will benefit from the busier forums, better 3rd party modules etc. etc.
So even if you don’t need this bit, i would still encourage you to drop in a tenner and reward those developers.
You are right. I don’t need this either but it doesn’t hurt me to drop $10 on it in hope that other developers will see the advantage of working with the Magento Community for needed addons. Of course, I’d be more willing to donate much more money to an addon that I specifically need, but we all have to start somewhere!
Same from me. Just hope the developers can see there are very keen magento lovers who like to contribute. I am coding idiot and I can’t help people with technique problems, but this shouldn’t stop us to contribute to the community. Money pool is an excellent idea.
Thanks for joining the pledge! Priest, I just read your osC post and you basically wrote down exactly my thoughts. Now you also agree here, the next time i bump into you here I might start to wonder whether we got separated at birth
$10 to me is not much at all but 70 x $10 makes a decent chunk to the devoted developer. Indeed, all it is is a start and hopefully it will lead to more down the track.
It would be nice if all Varien staff joined in as an example, maybe stick it on their blog. With 35K registered forum users, reaching 70 should be easy.
Both of you have empty signatures, please consider promoting the pledge/challenge from there.
This is a cracking idea but we still need a few more people.
I have no use (that I can currently see) for the first development challenge BUT I agree with others that this pledge is a great way to get people interested and motivated into making Magento a truly successful project!
This is a great idea. I would pitch in immediately for a QuickBooks synchronization module. I think the place to host the fund is BountyUp.com - a similar idea to PledgeBank, with a special section for OS projects and feature requests.
