When trying to enter the admin area, I get:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 1245184 bytes) in /home/public_html/magento/lib/Zend/Date.php on line 2446

I see in my phpinfo that the memory limit is set to 8mb: “memory_limit 8M”

Do I need to contact my host and ask them to increase the memory limit?  If so, what’s a resonable memory limit request?

Any help is greatly appreciated.  I was really looking forward to giving Magento a run.

you can add to your .htaccess this line:

php_value memory_limit 64M

Thanks for the help, Moshe.

I gave that a go.  Here’s exactly how my .htaccess file reads.  It’s in the web root.

AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php
php_value memory_limit 16M

The first line was because my host runs both php 4 and 5.  I had to specify that I wanted to run 5 for this domain.
Then the 16 M increase?

But the phpinfo still shows 8 MB and still no dice getting into either the admin or frontend :(

Ahh… my host figured it out.

My .htaccess should have been:

AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .php
php5_value memory_limit 16M

That valuable 5 was the error.
