My friend has an online store with Actinic but it isn’t going so well. The bad thing is that he has paid for someone to input 18,000 products, although he may have all the data in an Excel or Access file.

Just wondering if I could possibly throw up a Magento install, input his product base and then show him if he would prefer to use Magento..?

That’s possible for at least simple products now. You can look into the data he has and decide what’s the best option for you - to try and import or to wait until Magento Dataflow will be improved enough for it.

For sure you have to take into account that stable Magento version will be in Q1 2008.

What I may do is show him a working version of it with perhaps 100 products, then if he likes it I will add the extra 900.

So you’re saying that Magento shouldn’t be run for proper stores til Q1 2008?

Magento is currently in a preview release and not recommended for use in production environments.

In order to show Magento with sample data you can install a full package, that contains ~100 products, some categories, products review and tags, etc.
