Tried installing twice, without success - .htaccess problem?

I’ve tried installing magento twice in a sub-directory of my website http://www.itchycloud.co.uk. It seems to meet all the “System Requirements” and permissions, e.g. php 5.2.3 with all the correct modules.

But both times I’ve gotten the following when I navigate to itchycloud/magento or itchycloud/magento/install/ :
<?=__('Magento')?>

__(’Skip to Main Content’)?> »
getChildHtml(’topSearch’)?>
getWelcome()?> getChildHtml(’topLeftLinks’)?>
getChildHtml(’topRightLinks’)?>
getChildHtml(’topMenu’)?>
getChildHtml(’store’)?>
getChildHtml(’breadcrumbs’)?>
getChildHtml(’left’)?>
getChildHtml(’global_messages’)?> getChildHtml(’content’)?>

__(’Help Us to Keep Magento Healthy’)?> - __(’Report All Bugs’)?> __(’(ver. %s)’, Mage::getVersion())?>
__(’Magentoâ„¢ is a registered Trademark of Irubin Consulting Inc. DBA Varien. © Copyright 2007’)?>

What could be causing this: some rewrite rules not being overwritten? It looks like some URL-rewriting is not working.

Please help, and thanks in advance!

-Adrian

Hi Adrian,

It seems that you have short php tags disabled. Can you check the .htaccess file under your magento directory to have the following line ?

php_flag short_open_tag on

Btw, are you running magento under php5 as apache module, or under php5-cgi ?

I’m running PHP5 as a CGI, not an Apache module - would that make a difference.

I still have not succeeded in installing magento. That said, I ‘ve been involved in other projects, hence my tardy reply.

Thank you so much for your assistance!

Hi Adrian,

Yes, it would make a diffrence, unless your PHP5 CGI takes care of php_flag directives in .htaccess files. You can try to find which php.ini is used by your CGI, and allow short open tags in it.

Please let me know if it helps.

Thank you.
