Hi there,
Also, I wonder if anyone noticed the Magento store loads slowly. On a blank browser window, when a URL is typed up and enter pressed, a site like http://www.engadget.com loads right away. With the same internet connection and also with a blank page, my Magento demo store takes 5-6 times as long: it usually gets stuck at the beginning of the URL, it seems once it’s resolved, then the page loads fairly quickly. I don’t know how to pock around this. Would appreciate any ideas.

This slow load at the beginning is probably due to the javascripts loading. When a script is loading it blocks any other download.
You can speed this up by moving all the scripts to the bottom of the page. This is recommended in the Yahoo guide that is referenced in the htaccess file.

Hello,
I am installing Magento for the first time and having permision problems. Do I understand correctly that I am supposed to go through ever single file and change the permissions to write and execute. The instructions say the top level directory must be changed but it said Error with permisions. I started changing them but after about an hour I felt like this could not be right. I running the install again and it worked for while but now it hits another setting problem:
Path “/usr/www/users/bmack66/magento/media” must be writable

Do I just keep changing permissions for all files?

Thanks,
Brian

One more thing,
the file that it is asking for does not seem to exist. I searched directly for it and nothing???

“/usr/www/users/bmack66/magento/media” must be writable

I don’t know what to do.

Hi,

I am extremely new to this forum, but have heard lots about this new piece of open source software.

i was having trouble finding out how i could trial this software without having to buy domain space and have a professional set up a web store just to learn the basics !!

i stumble across this....

there isn’t ANY sound.....

it is in FRENCH (writing).....and i speak no French AT ALL

but this was by far the easiest demonstration of how to set up a fresh Magento installation.

there are som considerable time lapses, so i recommend you download the relevant part piece by peice.....

overall the install should tak about........30minutes...depending on INTERNET connection.

so...good luck...i don’t know anything about databases or php or mysql or anything and it took me 10 minutes....with the help of the pause button…

smile
