You need to make sure mod_rewrite is installed. Magento requires it in order to support “pretty URLs”

Looks like you do not have mod_rewrite installed in apache..

hello , first at all i want to congrats magento team for releasing the products on said date ! congrats guys i bet you need a bit sleep smile
then i want to congrats them again for releasing it on free license
(sorry i hate the open-source term , an open source product isn’t always a free (as speech) product , but a free (as speech) product is always open source).

my (bad) experience for now :
i tried to install magento on ubuntu (dapper i think (anyway the last stable ubuntu) , apache2, php enabled (i can work nicely with oscommerce).
i got 404 error about the installation directory so i installed the mod_rewrite, and restarted

a2dismod gives me :
alias auth_basic authn_file authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_user autoindex cgi dir env mime negotiation php5 rewrite setenvif status

but the error occure again , i tried to put some AllowOverride on my apache2.conf , but i don’t know if i did right

<Directory /magento>
AllowOverride All
</Directory>
thanks for you help in advance

Hi to all,

i’m also experiencing difficulties with URL rewriting.
I’m on OVH, a french provider that does not support URL rewritting by default.
Thus, i inserted a .htaccess file on the www folder with the following code :
------------------------
SetEnv PHP_VER 5
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /www/
--------------------------

The 1st line helps me not to get the PHP error message as it activates php5 on my server
Then the following lines are supposed to activate the url rewrite…

When I open http://www.mydomain.com on firefox, i’m redirected to http://www.mydomain.com/install
and i get a 404 error : The requested URL /install/ not found on the server

Can you please help me guys ? :(
Thans a lot for ur answer

hello i’m french too , i had a .htaccess problem with OVH the solution was to chmod 644 -rw-r--r-- as i just seen the magento .httaccess is 664 -rw-rw-r-- so maybe that can solve the problem , and maybe solve my problem with the same error i have on local (can’t test now i’m not at home)

pls pls give feedback if it work or not

thanks skel for the tip. Unfortunatly, same result : 404 /install/ not foun don the server
I’ve tried to set attributs to 644, 664 and 777 on the .htaccess that i’ve created and that i put on the WWW folder
This is gonna drive me nuts ! Please help me !

The thing I dont understand is that when I type http://www.mydomain.com, it redirects me to http://www.mydomain.com/install
Does it mean that the URL rewriting is working ???? the pb may be coming from elsewhere ??

Thanks for the answer

The redirect does not mean the mod_rewrite is working, it is merely a header(’location: /install’); command being sent through php. The mod_rewrite would tell apache that it should be sending all requests through index.php and not actually look for an install directory as it is doing.

You may need to call your host and ask them to enable the mod rewrite engine.

And your welcome grin

Try using something like this to see if Mod Rewrite is actually working,
Put this code into an .htaccess in some other directory and navigate to that directory.

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>

RewriteEngine on
</IfModule>

Then this

RewriteEngine on

If the first code doesnt throw an error and the second does, then your Mod Rewrite is NOT INSTALLED CORRECTLY,
If first and second throw an error then there is another unkown issue causing the problem.

hello ,

i tried the 2 tests

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
</IfModule>

and

RewriteEngine on

both solutions allow me to browse the directory , and to see the index.html i create in the dir , so i guess that my mod_rewrite is correctly setup , but the :

The requested URL /magento/install/ was not found on this server.

error still remaind , what is going wrong in my box , i have heard some people installed magento on linux box without any
trouble

Hi,
Same here, I tried both solutions => the mod rewrit is on on my server

I’m thinking to the following issue
what the URL rewriting syntax used on magento ?
I know that OVH is using this

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !testing.php
RewriteRule (.*) testing.php?var=$1

is it the same for magento ?

How to change your Theme

if you go to System/Design and then click on the Add Design Change button… you can tell it to use the new design site-wide...

Wrong Post Sorry
