I created a Books attribute set based upon the attribute set Default.
As far as I am aware this is a basic install of Magento 1.1.2 and up until this point the Add Product pages were working fine.
Now everytime I add a new product and choose my Books or the Default attribute set with the any Product Type (inc. Simple Product) it errors.
I had something similar but in a different page. It turned out that somehow the directory and all its content “dissapeared”. How? Not sure. Make sure that the file /home/sites/USERNAME/public_html/shop/app/code/core/Mage/Core/functions.php is still there. other than that I’m just a noob…

Good luck.
Thanks for the suggestion but the file is there and a quick compare shows it’s the same as the one from the extracted base install.
Sorry to have to bump this but I’m getting nowhere with this.
I could carry on working on the site but I’ve the shop owner wanting to get a start at adding products ASAP.
Anyone got any ideas? :D
Sure looks like your attribute set has a missing boolean for the gift message. Don’t know why it would, but that’s how I read the error message.
Gosh, I don’t know how to fix it, but I was just about to create a new attribute set so my shop owner could put some products in… Now the question is do I risk getting the same problem? Or assume you did something in yours to cause it to crash and I won’t do the same thing?
