Are there any plans for Magento to use dimensional freight calculations? Some other carts allow you to specify that items are to be shipped separately and also try to determine the number of boxes and their weights. Any plans for options like these?

We do not have plans to have this functionality for the first stable version of Magento.

We hope to add it in the future or as a contribution by the community.
