Question about Magento’s scalability

We are creating a website which allows suppliers to create and manage their own products. To do this, we are going to be creating a separate Store for each supplier. So, the one Website can have 100s of Stores, each with the possibility for up to 100 products. Our question is, can Magento feasibly handle, for example, 1000 Stores and up to 50,000 products? Has the Magento team tested the platform using such large numbers?

It may be feasible depending on your infrastructure/environment but has not been tested under such conditions. I would also advise you to read through Magento’s license carefully to make sure you are aware of the implications.

Thanks for the reply. What sort of implications do you mean? Doesn’t this sort of usage fall under the terms?

Magento’s open source license (OSL) certainly supports it and defines such work as an external deployment (section 5). As such the “translation, adaptation, alteration, transformation, and/or modifications” need to be licensed under the same license as the original work (OSL). In other words, if you distribute Magento “over a network”, any changes you make need to make it back to the community under an OSL license.

Magento can also be licensed under a commercial license which removes some these requirements.

Thanks Roy for clarifying that! Also please let us know if you ever test Magento in such a large environment. We are going ahead with development, but we are a little anxious about the possibility that scalability will not be good past a certain threshold.

We are constantly testing Magento in very large environments. Your case seems extreme and the product was never intended to support full separation of shops.

Good luck smile

Yes I can imagine our case is definitely on the extreme end of things. As for separation of shops, I’m not sure what you mean. We are using shops as a way to segregate products based on supplier, so that supplier A cannot modify supplier B’s products (obviously this requires customization to do store-level restrictions), but all the shops will be visible on the front-end.

Also, do you have a better alternative of accomplishing this, or is shop-for-each-supplier the best method?

I see this post is almost 2 years old now.  Is there any more information on the scalability?  I also would like to scale to 1000 stores.  Is there any more testing on this there an application that someone can point to where this many storefronts has been done?

Regarding separation of shops, how does Magento compare to something like Extended Sites in IBM WebSphere Commerce?  Would supporting multiple sites stemming off of the same master catalog be feasible with Magento, or require extensive customization?

Thanks
