“Page Not Found” error after following Magento Install Instructions

Hello everyone,

I have been at it since the Magento Preview build was released but I have not managed to get it to work.

I am hoping someone can land a hand.

Following the instructions on this page:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/magento-installation-guide

I get an error message when at the end of the instructions I point my browser to http://www.mydomain/magento or http://www.mydomain/magento/install or http://www.mydomain/

This is the error message every time:

“Not Found

The requested URL /install/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.”

Also, my web hosting company meets the Magento requirements (they’ve got Apache 1 & 2, PHP 5.2.2, and MySQL 5.0):
http://www.magentocommerce.com/system-requirements

except for mhash extension in PHP. They are telling me the only way to remedy this is compile my own PHP. Of course since I am not a pro, I have not idea on how to do this.

Is the missing extension above the reason why I am getting the 404 error message?

mod_rewrite and .htaccess files and all that are already enabled on my web hosting account/ domain.

Please anyone help if you can and I thank you in advance.

Thank you in advance.

There are other threads that talk about this.  You’ll need to go into your httpd conf files and make sure that allowoveride is set to all.

grin

Believe me, I had done a search before posting this thread.

I thank you for responding.

Could you please tell me where that file is?

Usually you can find them under /etc/httpd

However, I’m running Mac OS X.

I am also on Mac OS X.

Where is /etc/httpd located? On my domain web hosting company’s server?

On the server.  You’re going to need root level access to get to it.

If you aren’t running this on a local machine, maybe you should check out ISP that are already hosting Magento.

Check out this page in the wiki:
http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/Magento-Web-Hosting/

It might save you some headache.

I am not running it on a machine/ server I have control over.

I made a formal suggestion to Dreamhost to add Magento their one click installs (they have quite a few).

Perhaps the good people of Varien should reach out to the main Web Hosting companies out there (top 15)?

Thank you for the link- I had seen those guys on that page.
I am loathe to pay-up extra for hosting for now since I paid one year in advance to Dreamhost (works out to about $8/ month), have 15 domain names with them and since they are really good otherwise.

I hope I will be able to solve this and won’t be forced into a corner.

hello everybody

looks like I’m not the only one who had this problem. I desperately tried to solve it and I could find somebody to do that for a long time.

I tried some freelancers, but nobody could really help me.

I’m not a pro, of course, and I really needed professional help.

I got a smart guy who solved the problem for me. So if anybody is desperate try to contact him and I’m sure will be able to help you.

Here is the email address:

I got the same error when making an re-installation. The error occurred because I had set MAGE_RUN_CODE and MAGE_RUN_TYPE in the vhost definition. When Magento cannot find a specific store in a multi site installation you will also get this error.

A much better error message in this case would have been: ”Store not found”.
