cinemaduro - 22 May 2009 06:19 AM Anybody know what the difference is between the User Guide info on the website and the new “Magento User’s Guide” PDF that is for sale now?
There is not much difference, the only benefit is that you have it all in one document, and you don’t need to use this website, which can be a bit sloooow and unreliable at times. There are still gaping holes in the information, it is quite surprising that it is called “a user guide” it is more like a “sales brochure” that you pay for, the things that you really want to know when you get serious are missing from the downloadable guide just like they are in the online documentation.
There is nothing about dataflow for example, which has only one teaser video on this site. You may also notice that Chapter 13 is about how to buy support from Magento, so in short the official user guide would appear to be a funnel into Official Magento Support.
One way or another it is better than nothing, it has its uses, but I would be tempted to look around, there are alternatives or complimentary guides available. Which may prove a little more illuminating =8¬)
Grow with Magento is one - I recommend it.
Beginners Guide to Magento is another.
I don’t wish to upset Magento team by placing competeing links, but a quick search of the web will turn up the alternatives.
(being an information queen I have Grow and the Official, having spent the money I vote for the former, the Beginners Guide is, well… for beginners… so I don’t qualify =8¬)
Not forgetting the uber geek publication “Programming with Magento” - pass on that one LoL
Which ever you choose, enjoy your time with Magento, it rocks.
