Maintaining app/etc/local.xml for development and production servers?

Is there a “sane” method (other than creating a standard username/password for mysql on both production/development servers) to keeping mysql information for both localized development and the environment on a server in the app/etc/local/xml file?

We had thought about possibly using xi:include to pull in the mysql info from an external xml file, but aren’t too confident that it is the “right” solution to this task.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Basically ignore it in svn. Then create a modules directory inside of app\etc\ and load your customizations in there (the xml <config> files).  Hope this makes sense…
