Install Magento under http or https ?

Hello,

I’m a little confused about where to install Magento.
I installed it under http and it works fine but when I try to checkout an order I got a 404 error : The requested URL /magento/fr/checkout/onepage/ was not found on this server.
I can understand that’s the checkout has to be done in a secure way. But in this case do I have to install Magento both under http and https ?

Thanks for your help

Regards

Jean Pierre

Hi Jean

Welcome! Actually, no, you don’t have to install under http and https.  Rather, during configuration, you should have specified the proper SSL url (e.g. your non-secure url is http://www.yourdomain.com/ and your secure is https://www.yourdomain.com/ and your SSL port should be 443 I believe.  You may want to ensure that the SSL port and url path is correct in the configuration.  You can go and change these settings in the admin panel via the menu (System -> Configuration -> Web (tab on the left side)) If you do not currently have an SSL connection on your server, then you should just duplicate the standard information from the Unsecure box on that page.

Let me know if this helps!

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.

I checked my configuration and it seems to be correct.
Magento is actually installed under httpdocs/magento.
I also checked in the administration panel under System --> Web and
under “Unsecure” I ‘ve :
- Protocol --> HTTP (unsecure)
- host --> ecommerce.mydomain.com
- port --> 80
- Base URL --> /magento/

under “secure” I ‘ve :
- Protocol --> HTTPS (SSL)
- host --> ecommerce.mydomain.com
- port --> 443
- Base URL --> /magento/

I’ve phpMyAdmin installed under https and it works fine.

Any other suggestions ?

Jean Pierre

Perhaps try setting the Secure box to the unsecure to see if it is indeed something to do with your SSL.  If it is, then you will be able to get to the checkout page under the unsecure settings.  Just something that you can rule out or not.

Let us know!

Hello,

If I set the protocol to HTTP (unsecured) and Port 80 under “Secure” I get correctly the checkout page.
As I’m just now testing and evaluating Magento, it’s not a problem but I don’t understand why do I’ve this problem.
As I told you, phpMyAdmin runs correctly under the url https:ecommerce.mydomain.com/phpmyadmin
