Better SEO URL’s for Languages

I’m wondering how I can modify the URL’s, so that when I switch views from English to Spanish/German/French, the URL will reflect the language in a clean way for the entire store.  As of now, each URL displays whatever the cookie says the language is once switched over.  So, / displays english/german/spanish currently if that is what is chosen.  Not good for the search engines if I want to rank well for each one.

I’d rather have the URL say the language on every page (as would the search engines).  So, for a language such as Spanish, I’d love to see:
http://www.mysite.com/es/ as the root folder.  Whatever I set as default language would be http://www.mysite.com/, German would be http://www.myslite.com/de/ etc, etc.  And all products & categories would need to have the prefix folder for it’s language throughout the site.

How do I do that?

Thanks for your help!

P.S.  I’d even be happy with a language folder suffix for the URL.
