Can Layered Navigation be TRULY excellent with Subcategories?

I love the layered navigation, but it would be very useful if not ALL the filters for every subcategory would appear at the category level.

Using the example of the Magento demo store:
Is it possible for certain filters - e.g. SHOE TYPE - to appear only if certain sub-categories - e.g. SHOES - are selected?  At the moment when on the APPAREL category, all the filters appear.  I know if you click on e.g. SHIRTS, the filter SHOE TYPE DISappears but this is not quite the same thing.  With lots of categories, sub-categories, and attribute filters, this is just looks unnecessarily cluttered when on the category level view.  Many attribute filters are only relevent to certain subcategories.

This would make for a truly excellent navigation system if you could do this.

(The other thing that would be very handy is if certain attribute filters appear only if other attribute filters are selected, but this may be asking too much).

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!.....

We’ve thought the same thing. Best we’ve come up with is only showing 6 and having a “More Options” link that shows the rest.
