Setting up Magento API

I can’t for the life of me figure out if I need to do some steps to set up the Core API.

I am using Magento ver. 1.0.19870.4.

The example of using SOAP to connect to the API :

$client = new SoapClient('http://youmagentohost/api/?wsdl');
// If soap isn't default use this link instead
// http://youmagentohost/api/soap/?wsdl

// If somestuff requires api authentification,
// we should get session token
$session $client->login('apiUser''apiKey');

To me, this hints that:
a) I need to set SOAP as a default - this kinda implies there is a set up or configuration option somewhere (perhaps a XML file? or in the Admin area?)
b) I need to set the apiUser and apiKey somewhere. Where can I do this? Again, this implies a section in the admin area of XML file I need to edit (which I can’t find).

Can anyone shed some light on how to get myself started using the API?

Thanks!

Technically you can set the API User in the admin panel. System -> Web Services.

I’m sure you get the idea.

You need to use version 1.1.1 or higher.  The Webservices API is a new feature in the 1.1 releases.
