hi, i’ve been searching for awhile and cannot figure out how to make the category just one column. is this possible?

doh, i think i figured it out. categories should be set individually in the admin, right? or is there a way to do it globally?

You can edit the file..

/app/design/frontent/default/YOURTHEME/layout/catalog.xml

just comment out the <block> tags in the <reference name="left"> block
