Magento

I just want to make an exact duplicate of the checkout module in the local or community directory. The I want to make magento use it. How would I do that? Do I need to create my own DB tables to duplicate the ones used by the old checkout module or can I use the same tables? This is obviously just the first step to a bigger change. Anyone able to throw a little advice my way?
