if you have access to system logs, which are usually in /var/log, you might find there /var/log/mail.* or /var/log/maillog or /var/log/mail/*, depending on distribution, but most of the time logically contains mail in the name.

Using `tail -f filename` or `less filename` with Shift+F while viewing you can see the log updates in real time.
Read manual for `less` command if needed, this is a one powerful tool smile

You can search in the logs for email address you are using, and most probably you will find error message somewhere around the line it is on.

My question is somehow related to this topic. So I give it a try.
I’ve installed magento on a server without a mailserver on the same host.
I need to use a external mailserver.
How can i configure this?

Thanks.

I already did realise this setting. But nowadays you really need to authenticate with username and password when using a external SMTP server.
Any chance this will be possible in future releases?

Thank you for your help.

Wouldn’t be more useful to use phpmailer in magento code?

It has much more features, more configurable, and more secure than simple mail function in php, currently used in magento code.

(and works perfectly with non localhost SMTP Auth servers (ie. in jailed or chrooted environment))
