Hi there !
I don’t understant how I can change the homepage layout.

In main.xml from the design/frontend/default/default/layout/main.xml is the following line :
<block type="page/html" name="root" output="toHtml" template="page/2columns-right.phtml">

Though I change it, it doesn’t change anything in the homepage.

But i’m creating a new desing, with new page template. I call them wathever.phtml and these new template pages doesn’t appear in the list , so how do I choose my new template.

Is it possible to keep my naming convention?

is it possible to just have a single template to handle all this?
Usually with other shopping cart software like X-Cart, I would just edit the header and the footer files.

In Magento Commerce, it seems I have to edit all over the place.

A step by step to how this can be achieved would be very helpful.
