Are there any psd templates or anything to help me get started with designing my own themes?  Where should I start?

Hello,

The Magento Designers Guide should be your first stop to familiarize yourself with the terminology and design space.

Hope this helps

No blank templates or themes, I’m afraid. The easiest way is to jump in, try the backend, read the default templates, watch the screencasts, use firebug, and read the forums and some of the wiki.

If you’re interested, this is a little something I wrote up after figuring out the specifics on my own. Hopefully it helps. It’s based on the default theme, since that is the only one I have used.

Actually, the 1.1 (alpha) release came with a theme called blank. See the following post to download it:

Awesome! This will majorly help out, I think. There is so much detail that I have a feeling I won’t want to craft it all from scratch, yet at the same time, if I do things won’t be as bloated, so I might want to. Plus it would be a good learning experience. I’ll go check it out.
