hi guys,
we’ve been trying to get our heads around the best way to setup our products in magento. maybe someone can shed some light on the best way to handle the following scenario:

on our product page, we have a template. the template base price is say $30. now we are wanting to allow our customers to choose between various “addons” or complimentary products. for example:
- remove credits (+$5)
- additional domain license (+$10)
- installation service (+$25)

- basic customization service (+$50).

then further down the page we have our upsell’s which would be something like 1 year club membership.

we initially created a grouped product which we thought would work well, until we realized you cant have a base price that can be added to the cart (ie, if they didn’t choose any of the complimentary products, only the base price would be added). we then thought that we could added the simple product for the template to the group, but since it puts the most recent product at the bottom and the fact that they would have to manually specify the quantity before they could add it to the cart, it would be more of a hindrance to the user experience.

so, back to the drawing board.

our next attempt was to use a configurable product with attributes, such as “remove credits: yes please (+$5) or no thanks ($0)”. the problem with this way is that we had to create a simple product for the “no thanks” attribute and when selected its added the cart, so the customer ends up with 1 template and 3 no thanks in the cart.

i know there are cross sell’s when the user is checking out, but thats not the ideal place to have the complimentary products, as they are specific to each template and we are planning on offering other products like hosting bundles there - which if its something that the customer is interested in, they can click on the product and read more.

i’ve been trying to think of a scenario where the above concepts would apply, as i don’t think what we are doing is that uncommon. something along the lines of:

main product is an ipod touch ($200)
complimentary products:
- free engraving ($0)
- gift wrap (+$50)
- in ear headphones (+$50)

so now the question comes, what are we doing wrong, should we be taking another approach, what is the best way to approach this?

any suggestions would be much appreciated!!!

thanks,
chris

If the attributes you have are specific to each product (template) - then configurable is the way to go. Did you setup the simple products so that they are not visible at all - i.e only make the configurable product visible?

hi ajazza,
thanks for taking the time to reply!! the attributes are not specific to any particular product (template), as we want the complimentary products (addons or attributes) to be available on all templates. when we tried the configurable product we did set the visibility to “no where”, as per the configurable product screencast.
cheers,
chris
