I’m in the process of uploading the latest release (magento-1.0.19700 including the patch) of Magento for the first time and FTP is going so slow I’m killing time here
Uploading it to a site I’m currently not using http://www.software-bin.com/ hoping I finally find a suitable ecommerce script that meets my needs.
Found Magento through the Oscommerce v3 alpha thread, installed OSC V3 alpha 4 and it looks like what I’ve been after for years (vanilla install on 1sweetpc.com). Tried Version 2 (a few times), but because of the out of date coding it was way too much work to SEO (I’m an SEO consultant) so eventually gave up, best attempt so far is http://www.business-investment-news.info/ (another site I’m not using), just couldn’t get everything right (I hate tables)!
So was excited to finally get my hands on a more up to date version of OSC, but then I find (based on reading their forums) that it looks like a stable OSC 3 release could be years off (if I read correctly 8 months for the last alpha update!) and I can’t wait years, hope to retire next year (I wish )
Like I said I’m an SEO consultant and if this is along the lines of what OSC3 alpha is (basic feature wise), but with frequent updates (stability is so important) I’ll be a very happy person.
I’m Ben, I’m the Web Solutions Manager (fancy title my boss made up, meaning I manage our web and design groups) for the ecommerce site www.denniskirk.com. I do a few sites on the side, and am exploring using Magento for a couple of those.
Hello to all the wonderful and wise folks of this new horizon, known as Magento!
My name is TOM, and while I am not a developer, per se, I am a copywriter and podcast producer who has had to feel his way along the electron corridor.
I know little of coding, although I am sure some of the bits and pieces I have picked up along the way must. in some way, RESEMBLE coding. I know nothing of the nuances of design, yet find myself fumbling my way to create where there is a need; So to that extent, I design!
I have taken a stab at OSC, only to relegate its contents to a non-removable folder, seemingly forever cast into the footings of my server, I have managed to keep it isolated, never to interfere with other Ecommerce efforts I have put out, yet there it remains, a monolithic tribute to remind me that some things don’t WANT to play nice.
I have spent the past two years working with AFCommerce, and must say was somewhat pleased. But alas, they turned the way of the dark side and are no longer Open Source, and my store’s features have been lagging, due to the lack of upgrades.
Figurng my limited knowledge of the art, I found Magento “Through the back door”, so to speak, looking at E-commerce solutions that PayPal cited as compatible with their gateway. A few clicks later, here i am.
I am already impressed! So much so that I am just sorry that I didn’t find this sooner; Yet as I have read through the introductions I have realized that this was actually one of those magical moments where opportunity presented itself at the right time, and I am apparently able to benefit from this, as an epiphany, a moment of great enlightenment and even greater opportunity!
I am glad to have met you ALL… the wit, the wisdom, and the resourcefulness that is the collective “YOU”!
I promise not to be quite so grandiose in the future, but I am still standing in awe of what appears to be a great product! My hat’s off to you!

My name is Chantal, living in the Netherlands. I stumbled on Magento as I was looking for a good ecommerce solution. After some tests I am very exciting about Magento. I also will contribute to a Dutch translation.
Christian from Germany here. Searched for a good ecommerce solution. I have worked with oscommerce so far and thought I give magento a try. Just set up a clean ubuntu workspace with apache and mysql and making my first serious steps with magento. Looks good so far. Keep up the good work!
I’m Abel, based in the Philippines. The excitement of this community is quite contagious. Just downloaded Magento so I can tinker with it for the weekend.
Hi all, I am Shaun. I am a student at Columbia College Chicago studying web design and development. Magento looks amazing and I hope to become familiar with it!
Hello Everyone - Nice to meet you all. Each of you sound so perky and excited. My name is Rita and I hail from Texas (one of those damn Yankees that moved here in 1976 and stayed). I found Magento while searching for an ecommerce site builder that would do what I needed it to do, not cost an arm and a leg, and would really help me make a living selling quality home decor products and, lo - I found it (I hope). My new host is installing it as I write this and while I’m waiting, decided to check out the forum so maybe I would be able to figure out what I’m doing - LOL. Anyway, don’t know that I can help with any of the programming, but am always filled with good ideas, ample suggestions, and flowery feedback, since I will be “using” Magento as a retailer/webmaster. Hopefully, with time, I’ll even learn about “code” - Looking forward to all the neat things this program can do. Are you all sure I can do this?
Oh yes, I’ve very good with “writing” (having been a teacher and all), so I consider myself a great editor of the written word, if anyone needs any help.
Hello everyone, I am from California. I looked at Magento about 6 months ago and thought that it was still in its infancy stages. I am currently using osCommerce. They are good, but seems as though the project has come to almost a standstill. I remembered Magento and decided to DL and install. So I am writing as I am uploading. I look forward in growing and contributing to the growth of Magento.
A designer friend referred me to your site a few days ago; I downloaded the May23 release; put in the cgi-bin work-around for PHP4 as my 2 hosting sites both seem to be at PHP 4.4.4; and now, I have an empty store to play with!.
My first look is that Magento is quite comprehensive, flexible, and has a large community for such a short existence. I’ll be looking for customizable skins or templates over the next few weeks to see how things compare. I’ve used CubeCart for our Gift Basket business for almost 2 years, doing 99.9% of the work myself and looked at osCommerce and Zen-Cart. Magento features are a world apart. Feel free to drop me a line, especially anyone who has experience migrating from CubeCart.
