Anybody in this thread working on a dedicated host or are we all on shared hosts? I’m curious because I’ve noticed better performance on different hosts, but all I’ve ever worked on are shared hosts. I’m wondering if Magento would run a lot better on its own server..??
Re: SOLUTION for error #1005 on importing magento_sample_data_for_1.1.2.sql
I would like to thank you, Nijhof Internet Media, for posting a solution to this sample data installation script problem. I replaced the line in the script and it worked perfectly. Thank you *so* much for sharing this solution. :o) :o) :o)

Usually, with a dedicated server you will have more resources like CPU and memory which should give better performance. However, unless the server is properly optimized you might not get as good results as you would expect. It is important to tune the MySQL server, PHP processing can be improved with an op-code cache, etc.
A shared hosting package specifically optimized for Magento might be a good option if you don’t have a very large site with lots of traffic.
My host recently added the ability to install and upgrade Magento using a tool within the cPanel they provide. This way, even though I’m on a shared host, the installation gets done using SSH and does not have any timeout issues. I haven’t had a single issue installing or upgrading Magento since I started using the cPanel installer that they provide.
Hmmmm guess I goofed up… I installed Magento first… then i wanted to load the sample data so I can get a feel for this software… but I am learning that I need to install on a Clean DB..... maybe I can export my DB… install the sample data DB and then import the Magento DB ? Sounds a little backwards but maybe it will work.
Has anyone else been through this one. I am Very New like… all the way Green with Magento… I have a couple of Oscommerce Stores but this is a new learning experience for me.
Yes PHP was updated… I had Magento on the server… but then I decided I wanted the sample data so I can get a feel for the back end being that I am a green pea. This is way different than Oscommerce which is what I am used too… but with all the hype I am hearing about Magento I wanted to give it a spin.
Yes - empty DB (which I now see several people are having the same issue…
I deleted Magento and now I am uploading it (FTP) to the server to install again.
I have to say that Magento looks scary to a newbie lol
I will work it out… I always do… I am not a programmer - I am not a web design guru… but I do ok… my oscommerce site has loads of features. http://www.themancaveoutletstore.com --- but I like learning new things… so I want to feel the power of Magento.
I’ve just installed Magento Full Release [ver 1.3.2.1] and after that installed sample data [ver 1.2.0]. I have downloaded these files from magento website.
Magento installation was fine. but when I imported the sample data sql [via PHPMyAdmin] I got a long list of errors.
