Private storefront module

Hello -

I need to develop a custom module that would add the following functionality to Magento:

- For each store I create, I need to have the ability to optionally flag the store as ‘private’
- Assign a static ‘access code’ to the store
- When a page is requested and the store id is checked, look at the configuration setting for that store id and redirect to an “enter access code” page if private is true, and the access code has not already been entered

I looking for a bit of guidance as to the best way to implement this feature (which controller, models etc.  to extend) and how to approach the extra session variable needed to track ‘private store access’ separately from the customer login.

If any of you here could quickly type up a high level ‘plan of attack’ , the advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!
