How to manage products with many attribute-combinations

Hello,

we are dealing with products that have a small number of attributes - 4 - but many values for those attributes. With the current simple product -> configurable product solution we end up having more than 4000 simple products per configurable product. This - as should be quite obvious - is not a viable solution.

How can we do this otherwise? Is there any way to have a configurable product with its own attributes, and not having to have simple products for every single choice?

Best regards,
Björn

If all the combinations map to a specific SKU then configurable product is the way to go. The hustle of entering a lot of products will be elevated once we improve the process of creating a configurable product and add the mass product upload tool. If the combinations are not mapped to a specific SKU and a customer configures different combinations (made to order) I think a better approach is creating each option as a SKU and representing the product as a configurable bundle product. The bundle feature is still in the works and should be made available some time early next year.

Thanks

yoav

Hi,

By the way, it would be nice to use the price of simple products and display it on the product page, depending on the combination of attributes selected on the frontend. Because adding a fixed price on an attribute is not enough. It doesn’t solve all the problems.

In fact using the price of the simple products would be very efficient. Maybe it could be a configuration of the configurable product : use simple product prices or use configurable product price (+/- options price)

It would be a very important feature in the process of choosing an opensource ecommerce solution for our customers.

Moreover, Fields on the product page should be updated with the values set in the simple products, whenever I change an option (Images / Description and whatsoever...)

Do you plan to do it in the near future ?
