I am wanting to create a custom homepage that shows 1 product from 6 categories - so 6 products in all.

I have created a new design option in config.xml and pointed it to /page/homepage.phtml. In this file I want to use some of the code from list.phtml used in the catalog. But using code such as

<?php $_productCollection=$this->getLoadedProductCollection() ?>

to get the list of products for a certain category seems to be extremely difficult to move anywhere else. I can’t work out what variables to pass to the functions, as they all use functions that are compilations of multiple functions. Then they all use code like

And the $this variable seems to be a large array, taking lots of info from where you are in the code.

Basically, Magento is turning out to be more difficult to customise the design and outwards HTML than I first thought.

Can anyone help me with the above?
