hi,

i just entered the magento world and want to check if magento is a good base/plattform for us/our Customers. Especially talking of customization (of course ?! smile )

I’m developer and using php5 and some Frameworks for quite a while.

First impression of magento is very good (talking of the sourcecode), but
my current Problem is, i don’t find any basic structure-Information, for example:
- what Packages are there
- how does the Templating work
- how to follow the path of execution (from index.php to view/template)
- how is magento connected to the database

is there any and where to find it ?

i don’t mean the Api-Doc “class A has method B and C”, but structural overview.

sorry if this is the wrong place in the forum wink

thanks

Yeah, we are definitely still missing some basic documentation. What is available at the moment is:

The designer’s guide explaining how to make themes: http://www.magentocommerce.com/design_guide

Very basic overview of modules and execution path: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/doc/magento-architecture

Introduction to making your own modules: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/how-to/customize_part_of_configuration

The wiki and forum has some customization tips, but there is no documentation for making real database driven extensions yet. However, looking at the modular architecture of Magento, I am sure this will be an awesome platform for e-commerce development once they tell us how stuff works.

Haha - that’s a good one - once they tell us how stuff works . . .

Is that communication even in the plan?

I think they had better hurry up and bolster the documentation . .
