Layered navigation of the default category?

I’d like my customers to be able to filter my whole catalogue by manufacturer
Can you even browse the default category?

I’ve been trying to find a way to do this but all i’ve come up with is either
A) placing all my categories into a second top category which could be viewed and filtered ie

before
default cat
-cat1
-cat2
--cat2a
--cat2b
-cat3

after
default cat
-default cat
--cat1
--cat2
---cat2a
---cat2b
--cat3

or alternatively
B) putting products into a second set of categories according to manufacturer, instead of using the manufacturer attribute.  While this would generate a nice url containing the manufacturer (good for seo), it kind of defeats the purpose of attributes.

Any suggestions/explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Both of your options A and B are possible.

Thanks for the reply.

I realise these options are possible, but the point is that they are work-arounds, ie they do not enable layered navigation of the default category.

Am I right to assume that this functionality is not possible with the current release of Magento? if so are there any plans to include it in a future release?

Thanks again

I have also been looking to do something very simular. I want my visitors to be able to see a list of all products in a category, regardless of subcategory. And answer to your problem Dave B, would help me solve mine. Let me know if you figure anything out.

Setting “Is Anchor” to Yes for the category should do what you want.

I’m looking to do the same as the OP, does anyone have a way to make the default category browseable?

I too want to always show my top tier categories, as well as, the sub-categories when you drill down.  I think customers want to see ALL the categories, no matter where they are at.  If you find a solution, please let me know.

I’ve found one Magento site that does layered navigation exactly the way I want.  Here it is: http://shop.jack-wolfskin.de/bekleidung/hosen/urban-outdoor?gender=32

I’d like my customers to be able to filter my whole catalogue by manufacturer

Now it is easy with the Shop By Brands extension.

Both filtering by manufacturer or brand or any other attribute as well as browsing the default category with all products from the home page becomes available with the Improved Navigation extension.

For Shop by Manufacturer or Shop By Brands have a look at the features for the module developed by FME
