I have been looking over the forums and this site for over a week looking for a solution to my problem. For some people, it has magically started working. For most, it’s like repeatedly running into a brick wall. I have set my USPS shipping method up according to all the people who have had it work. Everything appears to be set up correctly. I have been moved to the production server. My products have weight. Every time someone goes to check out, the USPS shipping method is as follows:

“This method is currently unavailable. If you wish to use this method, please contact the administrator”

What can I do? My site is located here: http://store.teamcovenant.com Any help would be much appreciated…

God Bless,
Zach

Alright.... Alright.... This was an easy fix. Be sure and in the gateway url, include http:// !!!! Ha. The url that USPS gives you doesn’t have http:// at the front, so you don’t even think about it. Anyways, if you’re running into the problem, that’s the fix! Enjoy this wonderful app that is magento!

God Bless,
Zach

Hi,

I am also wondering if anyone has successfully implemented their USPS or table rates shipping method. I can not seem to get them to work. I have tried over a week to get this to work. One thing that seems a bit strange is USPS gives you the API links and a username/password. The config box does not have a field for the password only has user id.

Thanks in advance!

i had trouble getting this to work, but I figured it out eventually.  i was receiving the same error message as you.
When you go to USPS.com, and you register for it, the name and password you setup is not going to work.
if you go further into the site there is a web tools section.  now you must sign up in web tools for access to their API.

https://secure.shippingapis.com/registration/

they send you a confirmation email, and then give you access to their TEST server, to setup your shipping.  thing is, I couldnt get magento to work with their APITEST server.
now, in the email that USPS sends you regarding testing out their API, it tells you to email them when you are ready to go to the production server to start using their API for real.

anyway, send them an email confirming you are ready and then they will send you back a confirmation email with the correct URL and a password for the productionAPI.
plug that into magento and it will work.
it did for me anyway.
the trick is to sign up with USPS web tools, then after they give you the password and url for the test API, email them that you are ready for the REAL DEAL.  they give you a new password and url.  plug that into magento under the USPS section, and it will work.  I believe the url they give you is the same as the one magento comes with by default.  you just gotta have usps actually put you in their system before it will work.
hopes this helps somebody out there.

the first email i got from them that gave me access to the test server started out:

“Thank you for registering for the U. S. Postal Service’s Web Tools Application Program Interfaces (APIs).  We are providing you with a User ID that serves multiple purposes, as explained below.

Your Username is xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Your Password is xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Your Web Tools User ID, shown above, is required to test and integrate USPS Web Tools APIs.  With this ID, you may begin sending calls to the test server.  Depending on the API, the address to the test server is either http://testing.shippingapis.com/ShippingAPITest.dll or https://secure.shippingapis.com/ShippingAPITest.dll.  Use this information in combination with your User ID and your XML string to send a request to the USPS servers.  For more details, refer to the programming guides (located at http://www.usps.com/webtools) for the specific API you are integrating.”

the email i received that actually registered me for the REAL API, and got magento to start working with usps, started out:

“Thank you for contacting us.  Congratulations on completing your testing using the U.S. Postal Service’s Internet Shipping Application Program Interfaces (APIs).
Your profile has been updated to allow you access to the Production Server.”

I just sent them a short email asking to be placed onto the REAL API.

BINGO! Dude you rock! Thanks. USPS moved my account to access the APIs, followed their direction and viola it works.

Thanks again kitatonic!

I have followed everything in this post exactly, and have the emails from USPS telling me I’m ready for the production server, but when I hit “get a quote” on the cart page to get the shipping cost all I get is the “unavailable” error.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

Ok, I was having a bunch of problems as well - specifically that dreaded message that “there are no quotes at this time”.  All I did was input the number of “Maximum Package Weight” to 5 and everything worked!!!!!!

That didn’t work for me :/

I used the username/id sent to me from USPS after signing up for the webtools, got moved to the production server and have emails confirming it, and it still doesn’t work.

I’m still using 1.1.1. I’m not going to upgrade every 2 weeks during development and have to constantly support new versions of Magento and not get my project done :D

Attached is what my USPS config looks like.

I think I may have figured out why things don’t work when you try sending to the USPS test servers. When I read the developers guide from the USPS I found the following:

An important note: the test server is set up to only accept a subset of pre-defined XML transactions and return the pre-defined XML responses provided in this document.

I’m guessing that when you send to the USPS test server from your Magento store, you are sending XML transactions that are outside the subset used for testing.

After reading this post and sending a request to the Post Office to move me to the production server I received the following:

Thank you for contacting us. The test logs under your UserID do not show valid test requests.  We are unable to move your account to the production server until a valid test request is received.  If you are using third party software, testing is not required. However, you must provide us with the name of the software you are using.  We can then update your account.

I replied to this email telling them that I was using Magento and received the following a short time later.

Thank you for contacting us.  Congratulations on completing your testing using the U.S. Postal Service’s Internet Shipping Application Program Interfaces (APIs).
Your profile has been updated to allow you access to the Production Server.

1. The Production Server URL is: http://production.shippingapis.com. For APIs calling the secure server, the URL is https://secure.shippingapis.com.
2. There is a line of code that refers to “shippingapitest.dll”.  You’ll need to remove the word “test”.

If you are using third party software and need assistance, please contact the vendor of the software.  They should be able to assist you in obtaining live information using our APIs.

Thank you for using the USPS Shipping APIs.

I hope this helps others trying to setup the USPS shipping module.

smile

If, like me, you did everything outlined in this post and are still getting the “This shipping method is currently unavailable” message, double check the units used for weight, and the product weight for the products in the cart that you’re using to test the system.

I understand from this post: http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/8695#t31885, entitled USPS - Weight, Pounds, Ounces - Shipping Questions, Weights and Handling Fees that the units to be used for product weights for US located stores is pounds and ounces, with ounces converted to decimal values of a pound, ie 1 ounce = 0.0625.

I had some very light jewellry products weighing a few grams, for which the weight was set as 0.005.  When I changed the product weight to 0.0625 the one page checkout displayed the USPS shipping estimate instead of the “...currently unavailable..” message.

I then tried reducing the product weight to half an ounce, 0.03125, and refreshed the checkout again and was given the “..shipping method...unavailable..” message.

So it seems that USPS needs a weight value of an ounce or thereabouts, and will not return a minimum shipping price estimate if the weight given is too low.

(I’m running Magento 1.1.6 on a Linux Centos server; California origin address and currently shipping to US addresses only, with USPS Priority Mail and Express Mail selected.)
