Initial Page Load - Performance Problem - Sessionization?

Some other posters have mentioned that the home page is slow to load on the initial request but is fine for subsequent requests. That’s true but it’s not just the home page, we’ve found. It seems to affect lots of other pages - maybe all?

Aside from the initial asset load (js, css etc.), which wouldn’t on its own account for the slow load, the other thing that is special about a user’s first request is sessionization. Is it possible that there is an issue with sessionizing the user?

UPDATE
Maybe it is just the assets after all. Looking at the page load with Firebug, it does seem to be taking a long time to bring down all the images etc. Anybody come up with a way to speed things up?

-Enable caching in Magento backend
-Enable MySQL query cache
-Enable Apache mod_deflate
-Install and properly configure either eAccelerator or APC
-Run MySQL locally, not externally
-Use high speed local disks or iSCSI SAN
-Tweak your my.cnf file for MySQL
-Remove any unnecessary PHP extensions
-Stop or disable any unnecessary services (e.g. control panel, IMAP, FTP, etc.)
-Make sure you have plenty of RAM and CPU allocated, the more the beter
