Here is what I need to do:

We sell school uniforms to schools. We want to allow schools to have their own customized shopping cart, so that parents can login to their schools shopping cart and purchase only the uniform options that their particular school allows. Should I just open separate shopping carts on subdomains ( school.domainname.com ) for each school? Or is there a way to do this in Magento 1.1.x or 1.2 (coming soon I hear)?

Best way I can think of to do this is to have a separate store for each school then assign the products to that particular store

Sounds like the separate store solution would work the best, the assigning products to customer groups is towards the bottom of the road map, so it will probably be toward the end of year before they start on that project
