I am finally at the point where we can go live with one of the two magento sites we’ve been developing, got the gateway working etc.

So we need an ssl cert of course.  Is there anything special a person installing it needs to know or do for magento? I have never done one in my life. I shudder at the thought. LOL

Or is it just the regular routine for installing.

How about on the magento admin end?  Do I need to change or do anything?  Thanks.  Does the checkout just automatically know to go to an https url or do I need to do something? It would seem like I must do something, but so far havent found anything.

Well you can always ask your host to install the SSL for you which seems to me like the best bet.
But if you want to do it on your own, I’m pretty sure it’s going to be quite a learning experience.

First it depends on what kind of control panel you have. Cpanel,Plesk,DA all have ability for you to get your SSL installed and running. There are many ssl install guides on the net if you search for it.

In brief, what you have to do is:
- generate CSR (from the control panel)
- send that generated CSR key to the SSL provider
- then wait for your Certificate
- insert that certificate to your SSL cpanel menu

There are more options too, if it’s like Godaddy you have to paste like 3 certificates, but if you go with like RapidSSL it’s much easier as you don’t need any of the intermediate certificates, etc....

Then you want to activate SSL from the magento admin, modify your base url to be https:// , once you do those you should be pretty much set.

Thanks, yes my host is installing them.  Its GoDaddy, he did one from them already.  Mostly I needed that bit about the base url which I think is going to be confusing

right now it says

{{base_url}}

if its http://www.epicurecookware.com could you tell me please exactly what I would put there instead of what itsays now?

I appreciate it.
I wonder why I don’t have my CPM emblem showing anymore.

anyway, thanks

Did you upload all of your images before getting your SSL?  I had to disable the ‘s’ from’https’ and set the ‘use ssl’ to ‘no’ in order to upload a few images.  I want to make sure I don’t waste my time uploading when I’ll have to do it agin when I get my SSL.

Just curious

Thanks

I have a Quick SSl cert. from GeoTrust installed by 1&1;Hosting. The only changes I made for it to work on the admin section is on the configuration section / web / secure / Where it says “Base URL” make sure you use “httpS”. And also make sure you anable the “ Use Secure URLs in Frontend” to “Yes” from the drop-down menu.

You can see my certificate on the left side at http://www.teanectars.com

I also did that as JoeNrmass said, BUT I also had to change Unsecrure URL to my site without the http in there, instead of {{base ul}} Until I did that, ever time I went to checkout, the padlock came on, but if I then instead of checking out went back to the site, it remained in https for every page, which slows things down.  So change the unsecure url also

As far as it causing a problem uploading pics, I cannot imagine how.  It has nothing to do with ftp, its a new entry in apached for the domain, and some files stored in a non public area of the server.  No I have had no problem ftp’ing since putting the ssl cert on.  magentomatt, how are you uploading these pics?  I can’t se why an ssl cert would cause any problem, never has in my 8 years of running servers, but you learn something new every day I guess smile

Hi

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I’m having problems with my SSL. It’s a GoDaddy one, and I’ve got it installed correctly on my cpanel, but I’m struggling with the admin section, and what to put in each field.

In the secure section, for Base URL, would I put https://www.mystore.co.uk/, or would I put whatever the Checkout page URL would be (something like https://www.sentientclothing.co.uk/checkout/one)?

Do I leave the Base Link URL as {{secure_base_url}}, or do I change that as well?

And do I also need to move any pages via FTP to a https folder?

Sorry for all the questions, but I’m nearly ready to go live with my store and I’m really struggling with this! I can’t find a written instruction or Screencast on how to do it.

Mine is godaddy also, though I use no cpanel or any of that stuff. But as far as magento all you do is make 3 changes. See the attached screen capt 3 changes, magento handles the rest.  Don’t have to doanything but install the cert and make these 3 changes, Attached

I Put *** next to the 3 changes

Thanks for that Anna.

I have tried exactly what you have said, but now when I go through checkout it produces a 404 error: https://www.sentientclothing.co.uk/checkout/onepage/

I’ve checked with my host and they say that the SSL is installed correctly on my control panel.

If anyone knows what might be causing this please let me know!

Thanks again Anna.

Kind regards,

Dan

I find your whole site is not avaialbe with https?

https://www.sentientclothing.co.uk/

When an ssl cert is installed correctly you can https any page on the site.  I doubt—if you have the magento settings correct, that anyghing would give the 404 on the checkout page except the ssl certt not being installed correctly. Esp as you cannot https any page on your site.

I am no expert, by far, just making educated guess, but I doubt its installed correctly and you can probably call godaddy support. They are extremely helpful and available 24-7 Or maybe ou weren’t the one who said you used godaddy, can’t remember now.  But anyway thats my two cents, the ssl cert is not installed correctly.  I would call the people who insist its installed correctly and ask them why https does not work anywhere on the site.

Else https should work on any page on your site.  try it on mine, epicurecookware.com you can put the https on any page that comes up and it works.

Good luck. Mayhbe somebody else can think of something. But in all my years of using ssl certs on several sites, several servers, you could always https anypage on the site and it would come up.  Yours does not, and I doubt the cert is installed correctly.  I don’t know anything about CPanel, but maybe its not the way to install it.

yes actually deleteing completely /var/cache is always a good idea. It never hurts, and sometimes helps out with weird stuff. Worth a shot, but only htat one folder /cache, a sub folder of /var Don’t be afraid to just delette it completely. Magento will rebuild it

Hi

Thanks Anna and Joe - I now have SSL working on my site. I applied the certificate to the whole site via the control panel and it works!

However.....

When I try and checkout, it gets to the stage where it should redirect to the Paypal website, and it just goes back to the beginning of the checkout process. Anna, you said earlier in the post: “BUT I also had to change Unsecrure URL to my site without the http in there, instead of {{base ul}} Until I did that, ever time I went to checkout, the padlock came on, but if I then instead of checking out went back to the site, it remained in https for every page, which slows things down.  So change the unsecure url also.”

Do you mean in the Unsecure URL I would put: http://www.sentientclothing.co.uk

Because when I tried this the whole site went down and I have to restore it from a backup.

Thanks again for your help with this.

yup, as far as I know, and what I was told by other people ont he forum who have this working, you should do exactly as I showed in that Screen Print. I have heard many times in my life about CPanel being a major PITA but know nothing about it personally to verify that one way or other, except what I have heard, that it screws up stuff pretty readily.

No doubt there are countless people who love it and have no problem with it, and maybe it has nothing to do with your problem, but I can think of no reason why chaning your unsecure url should cause the site to crash. Makes no sense to me.  Yu did leave out the curly braces?  only put the url, no braces, brackets etc.  but even doing that would not likely cause the site to go dwon. Sure you didn’t just do a typo?  But thats about all I know about it.  You probably need a CPanel person to help, I have never even seen it.  I do everything from SSH command line.

I would ask your support to check the apache error log for the times your site did not resolve, this should give some hint as to what was happening.  Unless you are able to the apache log yourself.

Hi

Thanks Anna. I’ve tried again and it doesn’t now crash my site, and https is working, which is good. However, it doesn’t take me to Paypal when I get to the end of the checkout process, it just takes me back to the beginning of the checkout. Which is bad.

I’ve done the secure and unsecure URLs exactly as your screenshot, but it’s still not letting me actually get to Paypal to make the payment.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Interssting, I just noticed the same problem on my site.  Its not open yet and I am working other projects so hadn’t noticed. But now checkout just goes right to the onepage deal, with no choice for google and paypal which are already setup adn working.  Hmmm. Anybody know whassup with that?  Thanks.

minute later....I notice ifyou click My Cart first, then the google and paypal links are there. So not sure how we convey that to the customerrs.  DOes your comoe up with paypal link if you go to “My Cart” first?  And even there I noticed Google link works fine, but the paypal links me to some obsucre page on my site
https://www.epicurecookware.com/paypal/express/shortcut/
