Magento has big performance issues, it’s not the server, the images or CSS. I own three dedicated boxes that can hold their own, and it runs generally crappy on all of them. Luckily I’m a Varian cheerleader and know they’ll fix the issue soon enough, but I wouldn’t stress yourself too much thinking it’s your own server.
I believe that the speed of my demo store already is good (I also noticed that it improved with 1.0 19700). I don’t see any problem to use it for full production, if the speed doesn’t change after I add more products ... This also apply to the ADD TO CART function.
You might test it out here: www.batteri24.com
(it is just a demo store for testing at the moment, but please don’t check out with creditcard).
I run a hosted site in the US (hosted by simplehelix.com) from my location in Europe.
Which Ver. of Magento do you use not all Ver. have the Speed Issue
I just Download it the latest ver and i run it on my local server and its extreme slow this is not a server issue for sure
Where are we on this speed issue? This has been on the table since last year. This software doesn’t need to run slow. The speed is a killer when it comes to ecom.
I have magento installed on a dreamhost shared plan, not too shabby at all with zen, joomla, drupal or any at that. It is just magento so far that is BOGGING down. At this rate it would take me months to configure my categories, products and attributes!
I am a first time magento user today and the speed of the site is disappointing so far.

I would appreciate any suggestions as this will be the deal breaker for me.
I am also not happy with the speed of magento it takes way to long to load pages/products etc, im staying with cs-cart for now which runs excellent on shared hosting, as do all other scripts that im running wordpress and others. Having dedicated servers is not a solutions to the speed issue, can the developers please focus on getting the entire script to run faster, more css less javascript and better mysql queries would help.
Well, Magento is a powerful application and as such will require a matching hardware setup in order to run satisfactorily. You just can’t expect great speeds at a regular, overcrowded shared server in the sub-$10 range. But Magento will run quite well in a optimized hosting environment.
I´ve just testing Magento on my own Windows 2003 Server with AMD Quadcore and 4 GB Memory with IIS6.
Magento is slow - definetly!
I hope Varien is working on it, because the Datebase is fast, other parallel Applications are fast on this Server and there is no reason why Magento should be slower!
Of course, on a more powerfull Server every Shop runs faster - but that couldn´t be the solution. This would be a point for the most possible Magento Users not to change to Magento.
Regards,
Michael
I don´t now what at the moment slows down Magento - but it couldn´t be the Zend Framework (i work with them too and everything runs fast)
To all those looking to speed up magento, i whole heartedly recommend simplehelix for magento hosting. It’s just night and day difference, a site that took 5 second to load just loaded up in less than a second!
But above all, their support is just something else. I dont think even Rackspace provides support like these guys, it’s seriously good stuff.
No, I completely agree with you there about the performance. magento just does not run well on a lot of hosting companies including my previous trio (dreamhost, 1and1, mediatemple) and wasted a lot of my time on them
Fortunately i was lured by simplehelix’s advertised fastest hosting and it seemed to have done the trick, but i do hope varien makes magento faster sooner rather than later.
