I was testing the paypal IPN setup and when I went to paypal and logged in but didn’t click pay, I checked back at the site/database and to my shock the order was already created from my cart and status set to Pending (what I had selected)… But that should ONLY happen after verifying the payment from the return IPN post… is something configured wrong?  In short, someone could just disconnect or give up without paying and I wouldn’t even know and I would send them products.

If you do hit the cancel button on the paypal page, the order seems to be reverted back to the cart. But that’s only if you click that. I know people will sometimes just bail at the last second from paying. So this “Bug” will cause orders that are not paid for to ship out.

Is this the way it’s ment to work? Is there a fix?

I could have paypal orders set to a different status and manually check them all, but I get hundreds of orders a day, so no thanks.

Its not a bug, its our logic. So for example if customer goes to paypal, pays there. And in this moment your serber will in down or something else IPN notification will not break through. And u will not have order for this customer. So we are creating order on our side before customer goes and after he pays (in IPN notification) status of order is changed & invoice is created. I don’t see a problem to check only that order which have status “Pending”.

All my orders are set to pending until I print a picking slip from my own .NET applciation. And I do see it as a problem as I get hundreds of orders a day.

I will try Paypal Pro payments and see if that interface is better since it should have live ssl communcation. Right?

We have had 4 orders now where a customer clicks through to pay on paypal, but they do not and come back to the site and pay by credit card. Instead of 4 orders in the system we have 8. Four of them for the paypal that they never used and then the 4 real ones using a credit card. That is a problem.

Yes, I noticed this earlier today, and it gave me a shock. I can see Varien’s logic, but equally at the very least, this logic needs explaining to the vast numbers of magento users that are setting up shops with paypal Std.

@RPGShop, I used Website Payments Pro which didnt seem to have this issue, (and didn’t seem to use IPN anyway), until I realised that you need PCI compliance if you use that Paypal Product. Which is another long story ....

Stock also decreases for me when this happens, its pretty annoying.
