i had the same problem. I had configured my smtp server in my own store. I solved the problem by configuring my smtp server in default config too. admin panel/system/configuration/ and in the left bar default config then advanced/system)
Before, i do this, when i just had configured smtp in my own store and only contac us and new order mails was sent.
I hope this can help you.
UGH. I am having this problem and everything is set to US/English.
Stupid question, but what do I put as the Host for SMTP settings? Wouldn’t it be the same as the database host that I specify in my.... ugh, I can’t find it for Magento, but I know I specify localhost for my Wordpress database.... and localhost is the default Host under SMTP settings. [No, this is not on my pc, it is on a Linux server, split shared hosting...] ... is that what it’s looking for or does it mean “domain”?
UPDATE:
Okay, I have my SMTP settings… this is a live store, so I guess I just wait and see if it resolves the issue… unless there is a way to prompt an admin email to go out?
I had this issue to, then realized (which it seems nobody mentioned) is to check that you have your email set to copy your orders in System/Configuration then under the section of Sales/Sales Emails where it says Send Order Email Copy To…
I thought it wasn’t working then realized that you have to have these emails set to copy to. So obvious but yet so blind.
Hi chiaraweb,
Thanks for your reply. I tried with my gmail and it still does not work. Do I need to configure anything to get it working? I went configuration->contacts and fill the Send Emails To with my gmail. And after that when I go to contact us page and fill the form and send , i don’t get any messages. I also checked spam and still no luck.

This can be a problem of server… I don’t know why, but I had same problem on ixwebhosting last month, now that I am on a private VPS that I have modified to rich magento requirements email works fine.
There is no other configuration over your description!
Hi,
My web hosting company got it fixed. It is now working fine. This is from their transcript:
We have disabled sending any emails with the field ‘FROM; containing email address on the domain that does not exist on the server. We have taken these measures due to mass SPAM sending through forums, guestbooks, contact forms scripts on our servers.
Mail relaying is also prohibited.
You need to change your script’s settings. In order for your scripts to work as intended, you need to set the ‘FROM’ field to an email address that you have created under your account.
Now after changing email id of gmail from the From field in all the places with mydomain email id, it is all working fine.
