I have changed hosts from Media Temple to HelpingHandHost and I need to know what file to edit so that my Magento install from my old host sees the correct database of my new host. I have already imported the database fro mthe old host but the DB name is different and that’s what I need to change as I copied all of my Magento files from my old host to the new one.

Hard to believe that something as simple as this has been ignored by the Magento staff. Has anyone successfully moved their Magento install from one shared host to a nother host? If so how was it done? I have my old HTML folder with all of the Magento files and I have the SQL dump from ym old database.

If your database information is the same (name of DB, username, etc) then the file paths can be corrected in the admin area. Just make sure to do a full cache refresh and it should work.
There are also config files in app/etc but Magento combines them to get its info.
Hope that helps.

It’s not the same...that’s the problem. This is on shared hosting and the database names are different. Looks like I’ll have to re-enter all of my product info which luckily will be quicker on the new hosting I have. Is there a way to import my old order data from my database so I don’t lose order info?

I wonder if anybody could make a simple tutorial with steps to both migrating from local to live sites and migrating from one server to another. I have the same problem as telder4336 and can’t find out which files (all the files) that I must edit to change configurations.
Thank you
Andrea

I would also like to know about this as I’m having trouble moving my magento install to a new host as well. There definitely should be an easy way to do this.
