Hello Varien

I was wondering if you guys have any plans for improving the logic for loading the sample data for Magento?

We actually have the installer script to load the sample data, from the control panel but I want to know how longer we need to support this feature.

Thanks.

Oh hey!  I didn’t see this before I posted about the exact same topic.  I came across it when I decided to go page by page through this forum looking for sample data advice.  I would have posted my question here, instead.

I know the “oldtimers” get irritated and condescending when newbies ask a question that’s already been answered in the forum.  But if there’s no SEARCH, then how are we supposed to do our own homework?  I’ve been using Google to search for answers in this forum, but it’s not working all that well.  Either that or the Q/A just doesn’t exist.

Anyway, my question still remains: when I run the installer script, I think it will ask me for the DB, db username and password.  If I want to use the sample data, what would those be?

And:  will there be a security risk in the future, if people never change the database they are using?  Bad guys would automatically know the name of your db.

@ StonySilence,
why don’t you use the search field at the top of this browser page? We have Google Search integrated into this site for the best search results from every site feature and section.

Thanks for the suggestion Adi.  I thought I had tried that and it only returned results from the knowledge base.  Or maybe I overlooked it altogether.

I just tried it again and, by golly, it sure does search the forums too.  It served up a bunch of posts from people just as confused as I am.  And a few complicated workarounds using SSH and other things I’m not familiar with.  But I did get a reply from someone on my other post, that may resolve my confusion.  If it works, I will post again with the results.

I need to study up on mySQL apparently.

I’m looking forward to it being integrated into the install.  That would be great.

In the meantime, I’ll get this figured out.  And probably learn something along the way.
