Hi,

I have uploaded magento, now going on try 10, I have followed the instructions to a T. Even tried uploading the .zip and .gz just incase. I have my data base created and I have modified the permissions on thee directories.

My server (provided by globat.com) runs on php 4, the have provided me with a simple redirect to php 5: Inserting the following into the header of the .htacess file…
AddHandler application/x-httpd-php .php .php5

With or with out that line I get the following message…

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

If I clear the rest of the .htacess file except for the php5 line, the internal server error goes away but then I’m greeted with the following…

Fatal error: Call to undefined function simplexml_load_string() in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/brianmwebster.com/httpdocs/store/magento4/lib/Varien/Simplexml/Config.php on line 494

I’ve tried and read everything and can’t find a solution.  Ready to give up.

Anyone experienced this or worked through it.

Do you have access to the Apache error log?
If you do, copy past here what you get when it is Internal Server Error

Hello Lior,

Thanks for posting so quickly.  I have been spending the last few hours on getting a hold and talking with Globat, my hosting company regarding the error logs.  It seems that I don’t have access, but that they were going to look into it and email me what they found.  Its been a little while now and finallly an email came through.  Except, all it contained was information about how to make my server work on PHP 5.  Which I already did, by including the line the gave be a few days ago. (

So I’m gonna get back on the horn with them.  Thought I’d just update you though in case there was another way. to resolve it.

I did find an article on Globat’s website that seemed like it was the fix, as it targeted my exact error message.. It’s solution was to comment out the .htaccess file line

Options +FollowSymLinks

Alas, this didn’t work.  The article link is below just in case you wan to read it.

http://support.globat.com/sc/index.php/How_do_I_fix_an_"500_Internal_Server_Error"_message_after_Gallery_is_installed?

Pretty sure the problem does lie with the .htaccess file, I just can isolate it.

Thanks Again for your help,

Brian

Okay. That didn’t work either.  I’m mucking up this thread now.  Apologies again.

I pasted the article below:

How do I fix an “500 Internal Server Error” message after Gallery is installed?

From Support Center

Symptom: A customer just uploaded Gallery and completed the process of installing the script.

When they attempt to load the index page for Gallery, they run into a “500 Internal server error.” message. Often times, this is caused by an option in the .htaccess file that Gallery creates in its directory. There should be a line similar to this:

Options +FollowSymlinks

The “FollowSymlinks” option is enabled by defaul in Globat’s settings and is both not allowed, and not needed by the web server.

Solution: To address this specific issue, you may either remove or comment out the Options line. To comment out a line (and force the server to ignore it when the .htaccess file is read), add a # sign to the beginning of the line. In this example, change

Options +FollowSymlinks

to

# Options +FollowSymlinks

Hey Lior,

Hopefully you check this thread again.

Globat finally got back to me today regarding the error.  Their reply was:

“Please disable the following lines in your .htaccess as they are not supported on our servers:

php_value
php_flag
Options
SSLOptions”

I commented these lines out and no longer get the internal server error, but instead get this again:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function simplexml_load_string() in /usr/local/psa/home/vhosts/brianmwebster.com/httpdocs/store/magento4/lib/Varien/Simplexml/Config.php on line 494

Is it possible that magneto doesn’t work with globat? Hopefully not.

Hi Brian,

Please make sure that you have simplexml PHP extension installed
You can also ask your hosting company to make sure that your plan is meeting all the requirements

Hello Again Lior,

So I finally gave up with globat and opened and account with host monster. And HOLY CRAP! They are Light years better.  The 1 click magneto installation took about 2 minutes total!  Notice to EVERYONE having trouble installing magneto:  The problem is your server, not the software. Switch over now and enjoy the most simplified installation of anything I’ve ever experienced!

Thanks for all your help Lior.

All the best,

Brian
