i have the following suggestions for an expansion of the newsletter-system:

I missed a method to import my existing newsletter-Mail-list. The persons on my list are not customers, but they want the newsletter.

I have not found a configuration to choose the method to do the mailing.
The best is the configuration for an additional SMTP - Server. So the mass-mailing does not affect the shop system.
Response statistics
It is in my interest to know about
- how many Persons has read my mailing
- how many persons has followed a link from the newsletter (which link and which person)
Bounce Management
Undeliverable Mails should be announced (perhaps mark the persons in the list or make a configurable option to delete the mail automatically)
Some people have been tossing around some suggestions, which should manage existing customers as well as people on the newsletter list. The external server would work but really not needed as you can have PHP mail make sure it doesnt affect the shop by sending it on its own time. If you send an html email you can put code to know how many people red it, and you can make the links in the email perhaps be affiliate style links so that you can see those stats, I have seen this in Marketing Manager for X-cart and I am sure this will be a feature the community or someone will develop for Magento.
Regarding the undeliverable mail, that should be fairly easy, either pipe the return address or make a bucket email address that is checked via POP3 for the emails to delete from the list
Another alternative is to integrate Magento with something like iContact or Constant Contact. I’ve used iContact in the past, and it is very good. Allows you to design the emails, write them, send them, and track them. Integrating it to magento would be very easy, all it would take is adding a simple form to your store.
Plus and added benefit of using a service vs your store is, you don’t have to worry about crashing the server as a result of sending too many emails.
I am looking at proper integration, being able to send to people that abondened their carts, people that haven’t logged in after a month etc etc. Auto send out sale specials and on and on and on.
Ajazza, Do you think pommo (the unique way it filters groups and can have unlimited fields) could inspire you? Do you consider using swiftmailer under the hood?

I would love to see this extension, with the ability to integrate order and account information to target a list. definitely a hole in magento at the moment. Would be willing to contribute financially also.
