Resolved

After 2 solid days - I have finally resolved this issue and it was a silly little problem (as expected).

By default it appears the magento install flags the customer group ‘not logged in’ with no tax class.

See - admin> customers> customer groups

See attached screen shot

Edited the customer group ‘not logged in’ and assigned the tax class ‘retail customers’ and voila - tax working on cart and reports etc.

Thanks to all who helped me over the last 2 days.

Hello,

After updating Magento to version 1.0 we are missing “Show prices with tax in catalog” in the admin (system/configuration/sales/tax calculation). We enter product prices whitout TAX in the admin but customers must see it with 19% TAX.

Someone?

After changing your suggestion i am still see all prices without TAX. And i still mis the admin option: Show prices with tax in catalog

@andyellis_2000:
1. Create product tax class (Exempt)
2. Create tax rule (Product class: Exempt, Customer class: Retail, Rate: Rate 4)
3. Make sure “Rate 4” is 0.00 in Tax rates

Now set all your tax exempt products to Tax class “Exempt”

Moshe, thanks mucho.  I had no idea we could do that.

That works like a charm

Glad I found out while I only have a few products.  cheese

Danke.

Hi guys, we have a similar problem. Since we have a German shop, “incl. tax” needs to show up everywhere, at least IF tax is included. Since we also export goods and don’t calculate tax for exported goods, we need a way to show “incl. tax” for german sales, but not for others. I already have tried out everything mentioned above but had no success. I’ve made several shopper groups, one for each country we deliver to (without tax) and one for Germany (with 19% tax). These shopper groups are also assigned correctly as long as a shipping adress is entered, but the tax info or different prices don’t work. This is urgent, since our shop should be ready today. Grateful for responses. Thanks and good night.

Great find!!  This is now working for me (and my client which is more important).  BUT IT ONLY WORKED ONCE I CLEARED everything from “var/”.

So I deleted everything in ‘sessions’ and everything in ‘cache’ - including all the mage folders.

cheers

Is it possible to assign more than one tax rate to a transaction, so that the invoice would have two lines, tax1, and tax2?

i was having the same problem. Tax simply did not show for me. I tried everything. Read all the posts and here is how I solved it. My store included a custom attribute. In this attribute “tax_class_id” was located under “Prices”, I moved it under “General” and tax started to work. Sounds like a 2 seconds solution but took me one business day. Let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Jack Dorris

One final possibility is that in the configuration the catalog prices might be set to include tax.

It’d be nice if you could exclude tax, but if you log in it would recognise whether you need tax applied based on your location and show the prices as including tax.  If you’re a guest it would be exclusive and you could see that the prices were excl tax.

To get taxes to show in my cart I had to do the following:

1. Go to: Sales > Tax > Manage Tax Rules
2. Select Retail Customer Tax Rule Information and set Product Tax Class to “default”
3. Save.
