asfaltagmail,

You need to make sure the category is within the root_catalog and is active. That should do it.

Categories don’t show.

You can see the difference between my admin and the demo admin, it is very strange! And I’m sure there is the problem but I don’t know why it happened. I made a clean install of Magento.

OK, I have just SOLVED it!!!
For anyone having the same problem, I think that Magento did not work good with one store only. The root catalog is it not created when you make a clean installation. Then, I made another store to have at least two stores views and then, in the category admin I could see and work into Root Catalog.

I have the same problem, and I tried adding a new store (under the Main Website) and two store views under that, but I still don’t see the Root Catalog.  Did you need to create a Root Catalog or do anything else?  Did you add the new store under the Main Website or add a new website as well?

OK, I manually created the “Root Catalog” as a category, and then moved the other categories under this.  I’m not sure if I need to create the second store/views, but once I set the “Root Catalog” as the “Root Category” under the “Main Website Store” (the default) all appeared OK.

This isn’t working for me. The thing is I really don’t want more than one store view as it’s really going to confuse clients with single store setups. Creating a “Root Catalog” category and moving all other categories into it doesn’t seem to work, so it looks like the problem is only resolved when there are multiple stores and a root catalog visible.

Thanks Magento for only showing the different store views if there are multiple stores setup - that’s great, but this issue needs looking at more closely. I am reporting my issue as a bug.

Actually forget the above - I just found out why.

Ok, if you do a fresh install and have a single store, do the following…

1. Decide on a category in which to place all other catagores, I used “Root Catalog”, I am guessing you can use the “Default Catalog” that is already there or whatever.
2. Go to System - Manage Stores
3. Click on Main Website Store
4. Select the root category you want to hold all your own categories
5. Go back to enter or move all your own categories (if you’ve already created them) so they are children of your newly assigned root category
6. Make sure all your new categories are inside the assigned root category and set to Active

I missed out numbers 2-4. Magento should really have the default category set as the default “Root Category” in System - Manage Stores. Mine was blank until I changed it.

So you don’t need multiple stores, thank god.

Perfect! That is the way.
I did not realize that, and then have to do a long way to obtain the same result. Your tip is very useful!!
I will translate and put in my Spanish group (Magento castellano y Magento Argentina).

Thank you for post!!!

No problem. Thanks rfazuer for telling us to ‘set the “Root Catalog” as the “Root Category” under the “Main Website Store” ‘. Once I understood that I realised what was going on. There’s a few things to remember with this, and I keep forgetting to setting categories to Active!

I have a few categories and sub-categories setup now, but when I try to add my first product, it goes to a Cant display this webpage error, likeits looking for an HTML page that not there or something…

I can select Manage Products - then click “Add Product” and I see the 2 choices of attributes and simple type, but when I click “go to next” it shows me this “Cant Display page” error.  Any ideas ?

I have the same problem… In my fresh installation don’t appear Root category as Parent Category. In my fresh install I have only two categories: Root Catalog and it’s subcategory Default Category (as you can see in My fresh install). No simple Root category.

In fresh install with sample data this Root category appears (like you can see in demo.bmp).

If I want to set multiple websites, I can’t create for my new website a new Root Website 2 category with Root parent category because this “mother of all categories” don’t exist.

I think that it’s a confusion due to renaming of Root (from demo) in Root Catalog (in fresh install) and Root Catalog (from demo) in Default Category (from fresh install)… don’t know. Anyway… with these renaming confusions appears if you follow Video: Creating Multiple Online Storefronts (Part 1).
