Hi All,

Last week I noticed some big rankings drop on my site, though this may of been due to the recent release of the new panda update (for those who follow seo).

Anyway, today I decided to take a quick look at the site, see if it is anything else other than an algorithm update (i’ve been doing SEO for years, so understand the difference between an update, dance etc). I found 2 instances of my homepage appearing in google’s index, as follows:

www.sitename.co.uk/
https://www.sitename.co.uk/

Now the second URL is obviously the secure version of the site, and is as you would imagine, is an exact duplicate of the non secure version. Google does treat all these variations as different sites, for example - sitename.com and www.sitename.com is viewed as different sites in the eyes of google.

By having these 2 sites in the index, it could trigger a duplicate content penalty and result in my site losing it’s rankings, which I think it has done. The https:// version of the site in the index was cached the day before the rankings dropped, so it is very plausible this is the cause of the problem.

Does anyone have advice on how to stop the secure version of the site from being indexed with magento?

Hi!
Magento is really not ideal from the point of view of SEO. Very many obvious functions are implemented not quite right.  As a variant, you can try the ready extensions. For example, I use this one http://mirasvit.com/magento-extensions/advanced-seo-suite.html and very satisfied with results. There are a lot of similar extensions.
