We are excited to showcase the screenshot of the Magento demo-store homepage. This design will also be used as the first design package released with Magento. We are working nights to bring you Magento Beta1 (preview) in these next few days (and yes, it could be as late as the 31st, but certainly in August), and thought you might like a taste of how the front-end will appear in full color. Click on the image below to see a full-size version.

I have been silently following the progress of Magento for a while now and am eagerly awaiting the first release.

Although I am not a fan of busy ecommerce pages, I think the design above is a good proof of concept showing how the various features of Magento work together. Something for developers and designers alike to get busy with to see how it all comes together and how you can move further.

Excellent work Varian team, much appreciated.

Will there be a way to block rude and abusive users from magento?

One way I felt this could be easily done without using the IP method would be to use the customers name and part of the credit card numbers.

To all the haters, and nitpickers that complain about little details and positioning...........this is open source people. If you don’t like something, change it.

If you don’t know how to change it, hire a qualified developer to do it for you.

These blog comments will very shortly turn into a forum and wiki in which we’ll all help one another get a grip on this new platform.

Varien is giving us a starting point that’s leap years ahead of osCommerce and ZenCart.

What would you rather start with: What you see above with Magento?

or this:
http://www.ecommerce-guide.com/img/zencart2.jpg

or this:

http://www.nevblog.com/images/oscommerce-frontend-small.jpg

There’s no comparison.

We owe a lot to Varien for the amount of work they’ve put into this. So play nice folks.

That duffywear-guy seemed to have done a rather ok job implementing zencart into a more or less modern design, so guess they will contribute to magento when it arrives. Nothing bad with that.
Which makes me ask; Will the first release be a more or less stable one or is it just Alpha/Beta?

The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1.0, released on November 20, 1985, lacks a degree of functionality and achieved little popularity. It was originally going to be called Interface Manager, but Rowland Hanson, the head of marketing at Microsoft, convinced the company that the name Windows would be a more appealing name to consumers.

Now only the most used operating system in the world.

This is pretty funny… you obviously have never designed software before because the usability of this is really, really bad. Instead of a beta it’s more like a barely stable alpha. Good luck with support - you’re going to get FLOODED if you release something like this. An open source model is a recipe for failure with this product, mark my words.

Austin, the template structure goes something like this: there are design packages which have themes, and each theme has layouts, templates, skins and translations. Layouts are XML files that define block structure, templates are phtml files, skins are css and image files, and translations are directly related to the Zend_Translate class in the Zend Framework. More info to come in the week ahead as the community site and docs are released.

However, I think to those who DO take the risk in using the preview release, it’ll only speed up the bug fixing and refactoring, etc.

I just hope that we have an active community of people who can post bugs and bug fixes UNTIL the next stable release…

I’d call the first beta a “proof of concept” ... an incomplete realization of a certain method or ideas to demonstrate its feasibility.

That’s not to say that it won’t be a quality solution, even with beta1. As with any beta, it’s a testing phase before the production version is ready. So by using it in a live production environment, you are taking risks and will have to deal with any consequences if something bad happens. But when it all comes down to it, you still have the choice to use the beta. We just won’t recommend doing so.

I have a question about the shopping cart(s) shown on the front page. In the header, it says My Cart (3 Items). Then in the right column, it reads My Cart - 2 Item(s). Ignoring the fact that it would be nice if it removed the (s) and used quantities to determine plurals, I am curious why the numbers are different. If I look at the items in the cart, it looks like you have 2 unique items with a total quantity of 3 pieces. Is there some inconsistencies in your definition of “items”?

Also, I’m not sure of the relevance of having the “Compare Products” box on the frontpage, but that is a completely different topic (and I know that its template driven so that part is optional).

Love the cart, I can’t wait to see it later this month.

That said, there will be significant work to be done in terms of optimization, refactoring, bug fixing, security etc. We will strongly advise those that want to launch a production site to wait until a stable version will be released. As with everything else in the world of beta software. Magento does not recommend using this software for a live store under beta 1.

It’s not to say you can’t, but until some of the bugs get found and worked out I myself would not want to risk loosing any clients or customers because of the possibility of an unknown glitch.

Dear Friend,

Thank you for subscribing to xyz site.

Then it proceeds to give them their “username” and “password” and a link to the phoney site. This doesn’t have to do with newsletters specifically, but as with most junk mail, it will not address you by name. And so that’s why I do like to get their name.

Of course, Magento is flexible enough that this should be easily extendable to provide the name functionality, but to save time for people who want it, an option to collect the name would be nice.
