Video: In-Line Translations
Magento’s next release will feature the ability to overwrite existing translations to a local installation of Magento on a global or per store view basis. In this video, we demonstrate overwriting the default translations for a drop-down field as well as a text-label using the new in-line system. At the end end of video, we also show how to enable such functionality on your instance of the Magento admin (backoffice).
We are currently working on a centralized system that will facilitate managing Magento translations to different languages. In the future, this system will manage the translation process for selected interfaces (including contributions made via Magento Connect) and modules.
Please note that translation can be made for drop-down values (any form element really), images (alt, title), links, strings inside scripts (warning, errors), etc. The following items will be displayed in the translation window:
- Scope - Module that the translation is associated with
- Shown - Current representation of the translation
- Original - The original text as provided by the module
- Translated - Current translation
- Store Specific - If checked, translation will be applied to the store view and not the locale
- Custom - New translation to be entered in the textbox
We hope you like it!

Is there an ETA for the next update?
2RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted March 4 2008
@medic - very (very) soon.

Do you have a set amount of pre-releases before the final product comes out this month?
Also, are there areas i should avoid customising due to future code changes?
4RoyRubin from Los Angeles, CA|posted March 4 2008
@medic - We’ve got some things in mind but nothing is set in stone (and thus not made public) :( In regards to the code, we still advise to hang on as changes are expected.

I’m looking forward to it.
We started ordering stock this week, so I really have to get my butt into gear when the final product comes out.

Interesting feature - looking forward for another pre-release version
to test it also.

Great stuff! This feature will make the translation _much_ easier. Thanks to you guys for listening to the community about this
And - you should clear your inbox from time to time… “Varien - Inbox (14144)” :D

@novalis - Although this tool is definitely going make translations easier I just wanted to emphasize that this also allows store admins to change text to whatever they wish even in the same language. So this also answers questions like: ‘How do I change ‘My Account’ to ‘Your Account’ or ‘Shopping Cart’ to ‘Shopping Basket’ etc.
As a side note, this will also eliminate threads like ‘Which is the right way to name things, Log in or Sign in’ , and text will easily be managed by the store admins as they see fit
.
Thanks
yoav

Hey medic - I’m in the same boat and feel you. I’m integrating my template and ordering stock, but waiting on the final release before starting to take orders. I’d love to go live in a week, but its more of a competitive advantage to have the features of Mage than it is to get an extra few weeks worth of orders.
Roy - I think that alot of new businesses are waiting on the platform. Thanks for doing such a great job in keeping close to your timeline, as well as the great unexpected features.

This is awesome!
Way more than I was anticipating from a first release.
Keep it up!

Where do the translations get stored? In the database or the CSV file?

Hi,
More than likely it is my problem that yours, but I can’t get any sound from the flash movie at this URL.
http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-on-the-fly/in_line_translations_magento/
It is turned on? All other flash at my ends seems to work fine.
I’m using FF2 and Flash 9
Thanks
oz
Looking forward to see it.

If we can store it in CVS it would be great tool
(for example admin store can decide these changes will save in CVS files too or not)
