Sneak Peek: Magento Demo Store Homepage
We are excited to showcase the screenshot of the Magento demo-store homepage. This design will also be used as the first design package released with Magento. We are working nights to bring you Magento Beta1 (preview) in these next few days (and yes, it could be as late as the 31st, but certainly in August), and thought you might like a taste of how the front-end will appear in full color. Click on the image below to see a full-size version.

Finally there’s an online store where I can buy high-heels and toasters...at the same time!

What a tantalizing glimpse, and an uncharacteristically short post! Where are the pages upon pages of copy explaining every perfect choice that went into this design?
Just kidding, I read the part about the all-nighters. I hope this thing pays off for you, karmic-ly and economically speaking. Mainly economically, which is awfully similar to karmicaly in my mind.

Hmmmm ... somehow the “wireframe” of the category pages (see post from July 31st) looked much more appealing to me. Of course you called it a wireframe, but I liked its simplicity very much and would definitely use that also as a final design.
But anyway—this is a very subjective issue. Maybe I look differently at layouts as I’m used to a more “european” style here in Germany
Nevertheless: good job!

BTW, are there “graphic creators” that will take your category images and names in order to generate the extra graphics like the top summer sale one?
Would be pretty easy to do with GD or image magick and really give users an easy way to get great looking graphics in their shops without being designers
21Daniel from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
looks great.
just a question:
will magento offer multilanguage support right from the start? (german)
22dizz from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
I like the homepage very much. Maybe not as much as the previous page but still an amazing job.
I need to have an ecommerce website ready for september and I do want magento for the backoffice (yes I know I should not use a beta but hey you app looks so great) and I wanted to know if I am thinking right when I say :
- all is made of blocks
- there is the central content which is the main part of the website
- there are 2 columns (eventually zero or one) that contains blocks
- you will rpovide blocks such as : advertising, cart, newsletter, comparison, reviews, ...
Am I right ?
23Sebastian from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
Since I have to hand in my bachelor thesis (topic is: permission marketing) by August 30th, I would appreciate if you release it on August 31st....then I do not have to decide if I write on my thesis or test out magento commerce :o)
24Scott from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
Anand, good point. I like to do this my self, it helps reduce chances of being filtered as SPAM and confirms to the subscriber that the email is in fact valid.
I’ve been seeing a new junk mail going around that says something like:
Dear Friend,
Thank you for subscribing to xyz site.
Then it proceeds to give them their “username” and “password” and a link to the phoney site. This doesn’t have to do with newsletters specifically, but as with most junk mail, it will not address you by name. And so that’s why I do like to get their name.
Of course, Magento is flexible enough that this should be easily extendable to provide the name functionality, but to save time for people who want it, an option to collect the name would be nice.

Wonderful, can’t wait for the release, if the very end of Aug, that is my birthday to celebrate
Is the beta 1 solid for live site? I already putting two clients’s site on hold since early of July. Starting on September if I still can’t give them this sweet baby I am afraid I need to use Zencart or they find someone else :(

As with everything else in the world of beta software. Magento does not recommend using this software for a live store under beta 1.
It’s not to say you can’t, but until some of the bugs get found and worked out I myself would not want to risk loosing any clients or customers because of the possibility of an unknown glitch.
36Robert from Hobson|posted August 23 2007

to better explain here is a quote from roy Aug 22.
“Magento Beta1 (preview version) is to be released by the end of August. As the version implies, it is a beta product and we will not recommend using it in production environments at this time. (thanks Martin for picking up the other question)”
37RichardF from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
How will translating the frond-end work?
38roy from Los Angeles, CA|posted August 23 2007
Guys - Beta1 will showcase the potential of a phenomenal product. That said, there will be significant work to be done in terms of optimization, refactoring, bug fixing, security etc. We will strongly advise those that want to launch a production site to wait until a stable version will be released. I will publish a blog post on this issue with more details in the next few days.
39Brandon from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
I have a question about the shopping cart(s) shown on the front page. In the header, it says My Cart (3 Items). Then in the right column, it reads My Cart - 2 Item(s). Ignoring the fact that it would be nice if it removed the (s) and used quantities to determine plurals, I am curious why the numbers are different. If I look at the items in the cart, it looks like you have 2 unique items with a total quantity of 3 pieces. Is there some inconsistencies in your definition of “items”?
Also, I’m not sure of the relevance of having the “Compare Products” box on the frontpage, but that is a completely different topic (and I know that its template driven so that part is optional).
Love the cart, I can’t wait to see it later this month.
40Scott from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
I’d call the first beta a “proof of concept” ... an incomplete realization of a certain method or ideas to demonstrate its feasibility.
That’s not to say that it won’t be a quality solution, even with beta1. As with any beta, it’s a testing phase before the production version is ready. So by using it in a live production environment, you are taking risks and will have to deal with any consequences if something bad happens. But when it all comes down to it, you still have the choice to use the beta. We just won’t recommend doing so.
41RichardF from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
That was expected but disappointing.
I need to launch a store and have been waiting on the Beta.
X-Cart for me until then I guess…
Anyone knows how one will go about translating the contents of the front-end (store)?
42Michael Kumm from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
I have been using a beta all along (osCommerce/ZenCart) I am ready! ok ok - I might wait until Beta 2 to go live.. looking forward to Beta1!
43Nick from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
There’s gonna be quite a few people using the Beta for production. I MAY be one of them, depending on just how healthy the 1st release is.
However, I think to those who DO take the risk in using the preview release, it’ll only speed up the bug fixing and refactoring, etc.
I just hope that we have an active community of people who can post bugs and bug fixes UNTIL the next stable release…
We’ll see though.
44Scott from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
Yep, that’s the best way to find bugs and such. We are essentially the beta testers, whether we test in a test/staged environment, or in a production environment.
I imagine the community site will be as busy as this blog with all these comments, if not more so. There’s a lot of buzz right now around here, I can sure hear it…
45Austin Biggs from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
Does Magento use a template system?
46Dean from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
You can’t say “Welcome, John Doe” and then have links like “My Account”, “My Wishlist” - they should be “Your Account”, “Your Wishlist”.
47Scott from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
Austin, the template structure goes something like this: there are design packages which have themes, and each theme has layouts, templates, skins and translations. Layouts are XML files that define block structure, templates are phtml files, skins are css and image files, and translations are directly related to the Zend_Translate class in the Zend Framework. More info to come in the week ahead as the community site and docs are released.
48kameko.rouge from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
What is with some of you people who can’t get over the fact that BETA 1 may not be ready for an actual production site? Some are even ‘threatening’ to use another cart? Unbelievable. This is an ECOMMERCE application. You will be dealing with other peoples private information and their money. Smarten up, dolts.

50Michael Quota from Hobson|posted August 23 2007
This is pretty funny… you obviously have never designed software before because the usability of this is really, really bad. Instead of a beta it’s more like a barely stable alpha. Good luck with support - you’re going to get FLOODED if you release something like this. An open source model is a recipe for failure with this product, mark my words.

Please dont hate the players.
Would you have told Bill Gates that?
The first independent version of Microsoft Windows, version 1.0, released on November 20, 1985, lacks a degree of functionality and achieved little popularity. It was originally going to be called Interface Manager, but Rowland Hanson, the head of marketing at Microsoft, convinced the company that the name Windows would be a more appealing name to consumers.
Now only the most used operating system in the world.
