By popular demand, we’ve posted step-by-step tutorials to installing Magento on Media Temple’s (dv) Dedicated Virtual and (gs) Grid Services accounts.

how is it now possible to install to (mt)’s Grid Service, since they use an older version of MySQL than Magento’s system requirements allow? Did the requirements change in the latest release? (I know (mt) didn’t change the version of MySQL, ‘cause I just checked!)

Magento system requirements indicate the lowest versions of PHP and MySQL we can rely upon separately. And there may be some specific conditions (i.e. combinations of PHP and MySQL versions, libs and so on) that will not have the issues we had on lower versions (e.g. pdo_mysql driver problems).
It looks like that Magento is able to run on Media Temple Grid-Service, though we cannot garantee that it will run on other hosting providers with MySQL 4.1.11.

Thanks. If I understand you correctly the answer is that the *real* requirements are much more complex than what you can easily describe, so the *posted* requirements are what you can safely guarantee (more or less guarantee, that is) will work.
So there’s nothing specific about MySQL 4.1.11 that guarantees that it will fail…
It might be useful to state on the requirements page that it is *possible* to run with lower versions, but that these are those which are safe to expect to work.

For someone who is knowledgeable, it might be a good idea to update this guide. I’ve had unending permission problems with the DV - I’ve changed them to what I believe they’re supposed to be, reinstalled Magento - the whole 9 yards and NOTHING but PROBLEMS. If I wasn’t so invested already with this app I would start over with another cart, this is just ridiculous.
